I just read at the bottom of a Dawgnation article where Kirby has only lost four times as head coach while having the lead at halftime.

Everyone without a doubt knows three of them for sure and probably the fourth too. As they are among the deepest wounds in UGA history

Anyway, that's a pretty intersting stat, and it got me wondering about the flip side of it. About how many times a Kirby UGA team had come back and WON games after trailing at halftime. I looked it up, and it's pretty interesting too

Any guesses as to how many?

I would hope the quitter mental patients from the game threads would be pretty accurate on this one.

Side Note:

INterestingly, Kirby has only been tied three times at halftime...

2016 UGA/Tech tied 14-14 at half; lost 28-27
2019 UGA/UK tied 0-0 at half; won 21-0 in a monsoon
2020 UGA/MissSt tied 17-17 at half; won 31-24

Looking at the '16 schedule, we were behind to Ole Miss (L), Vandy (L), Florida (L), UK (W), Auburn (W), and TCU(W).

In '17, it was ND (W), Auburn (L), Oklahoma (W).

In '18, it was LSU (L) and Texas (L).

In '19, it was ND (W) and LSU (L).

In '20, it was Arky (W), UT (W), Bama (L), UGF (L), and Cincinnati (W).

So, his record when trailing is 9-9. That's pretty good to be .500 when trailing at the half.

I don’t know. Being down to Arkansas and UT last year wasn’t a good look

Well, i was hoping for "guesses" which might have illustrated the point better i think, but oh well

The point: Kirbs definitely doesn't get enough credit for his adjustments and success in the 2nd Half. Minus his efforts against Alabama which is otherwise the anomaly

quote:

The Anomaly:

Kirby's three 1st Halfs against Alabama:
Georgia 58
Alabama 34

Kirby's three Second Halfs against Alabama:
Alabama 68
Georgia 17

Ouch. Put another way, Kirby outscored Saban by 24 in the first halfs, while Saban outscored Kirby by 51 in the second halves.

And i'm not trying to knock Kirby here. This says more about the greatness of Saban than anything else.

kirby doesn't get enough credit for just about anything period. if it wasn't for alabama kirby would be considered probably the 2nd best (at WORST) coach in america. I can't even look at other SEC boards because they're infested with shite eating window licking trolls that only want to define kirby by 2 games against the best program adn the best coach in the history of college football.

The fact is - we've done something I don't think I've ever seen another football school do: successfully fire a very good coach (averaging approx. 10 wins a season) and replace him with an even better one.

It's actually pretty amazing, especially when you see what has happened at other schools who have tried it, or have waited too long to get rid of an average to above-average coach (here's lookin' at you Auburn ).

We took a huge risk in firing CMR and took a lot of flack for it early on. That criticism has evaporated with the success of Kirby and the failure of Richt at Miami.

Anyway, I give the school a LOT of credit for pulling it off, regardless of what happens next year. In my opinion, however, the future is oh so bright.

It's like in golf, with the players that had the misfortune of playing in the era of the two greats, Jack or Tiger.

Think of Nick Faldo with his 6 majors that came exactly in between the time when Jack finally faded and right before Tiger arrived. If Faldo was born a decade sooner or later, he's basically a Justin Rose.

It took me 20 minutes to dig out the Kirby stats about wins after trailing. And it took Floyd Dawg only about 5

We need Floyd Dawg to crunch halftime lead/trailing results for Saban and other SEC contenders. We are on to something

Jefferson, do you want Saban’s numbers since Kirby took over in Athens? Or do you want them split by Bama and LSU?

I did have to put in a LITTLE work...

I dont know. What do you think is the most valuable intel?Would Saban's 23 career losses at Alabama be too much to track halftime leading vs trailing wise?
