Football is not number one and they place a greater emphasis on character. With a couple playmakers on offense, he could have done really well at Air Force.

I think he probably wanted to win at a high level though which AF wouldn't be. The guy played at Miami, coached at FSU, coached here, then back to Miami. Despite him being "too nice" or whatever, his playign and coaching hsitory would indicate he wanted to be with the big boys on a big stage.

Except he wouldnt do what was necessary to win based on our peers and was hideous at roster management.

Those problems get magnified at service academies.... They have to do more with less, not less with more.

and richt would never go to a service academy in the first place, that was my whole point.

That's a good point. However, he didn't run the program like a high level school should have been run. No facial hair and game suspensions for minor infractions. Those are rules you'd find at a service academy, not a power 5 team. Everyone at a service academy is on scholarship so they can sign as many players as they want in a recruiting class. That makes roster management a moot point. His mindset was more suited to coach there instead of a power 5 school.

CMR didn't get the same investment from our AD as CKS has gotten, and CMR didn't have the luxury of a playoff system until his last season.

Whether CMR shares any responsibility for the lack of investment (not pushing for it, or something else), I don't know, but it's my understanding that CKS said upfront that he would need the financial backing to create a championship program, and he got it.

I think that's a tragic, but essential point for the CMR era.

Georgia could've been in the 2002, 2007, and 2012 playoffs. And those 2007 and 2012 teams would've had a damn good chance of winning.

Yah, I've often thought "what if" if CMR had a playoff system in place. The 2007 team was really playing great towards the end of the season, but you would really say the same for 02 and 12.

Richt would underachieve massively with less talent. He probably wouldn't last more than 3 years.

2007 is a great "what if" squad

They were absolutely electric in the final half of the season and would buzzsaw any team in their way, IMO. They would have won from the #4 seed if there had been a CFP in '07.

Projected playoff from post CCG weekend would be

1: Ohio State
2: LSU
3: Oklahoma
4: Georgia

2012 was good, and could have won a title in a CFP mulligan, but the 07 team just had a distinct aura around them.

I thought Richt was right where he needed to be from 2001-2008. He did take UGA up a level by winning 2 SEC championships. He probably should have been fired after 2010 but I don't think McGarity had a good backup plan and didn't have the guts to do it. I think the 2012 Bama game kind of broke him. After that it was downhill. I don't know if going to Miami sooner than 2016 would have had better results, but at the time it seemed like a great fit.

To be fair to coaching, firing after playing a freshman QB isn't really a "good plan". The whole point of playing the freshman is building to the future. You kind of waste that changing regimes (you may as well have fired him after the 2009 season going 8-5 and knowing that the QB cupboard was going young the following season).
