I've been watching the 2020 game replays the last few weeks. It seems that when the offensive line has trouble blocking, Luke has been able to make adjustments at halftime but not on the fly. I hope this will improve this year.

I watched an extremely impressive YouTube video a few days ago. It’s primary focus was breaking down and showing just how special JT could be using the tape from Cincinnati. My point for this thread is the video spent like 4 minutes basically saying replace Truss lol

Truss was a fricking turnstile all night long against Cinci. Mims and Jones need to grow up in a hurry, if they want Salyer at Guard next year.

Ive been saying for a year that Truss is a RG. He could be the next Ben Cleveland (former mammoth tackle moved to the interior because he cant handle a speed edge rush).

This isnt rocket science. It is as obvious as complaining about Tyler Catalina and Isaiah Wynn playing in the wrong spots besides one another.

Unless he’s dedicated himself to the weight room then he is only comparable to Cleveland in height and weight. Not body build. Cleveland looked like he lifted a lot. He also had natural strength. Truss just looks big. He can be successful but he’s not Cleveland level brute strength. Too bad there’s no actual combine. Cleveland may hit 30 on the 225 bench.

I heard he could hit 50 on the 225 bench. In fact, I thought I read a couple of years ago he hit 50 and quit, but could’ve kept going.

Webb was a center in high school but scouts say he should play tackle due to his footwork.

That would be a disappointment. I think he would hit a lot higher than 30.

Bresse, Murphy, and Davis will be a handful for our Offensive Line week 1. Their inconsistencies in games such as against MSU and Cincinnati have me concerned.

Ummm. Style of play?
They both are road graders.
Truss would be a beast (like Cleveland) downblocking on the interior.

You want your interior line to move people. Why do you think Truss got 62 snaps last season as the backup LT? What does he do well? What skill does he bring to the unit better than any of the other tackles?

I don’t think he belongs starting period. We were better with Salyer at tackle than when we forced him down to guard for cincy. Truss was not very good against cincy. If he improves then great but I didn’t like what I saw of him at tackle last year. I don’t really care where Salyer best projects at. He was excellent at tackle last year. No reason to move him. They all said Wynn was too small too.

I think 5th year SR Justin Shaffer could be as good as, I dare say, Solomon Kindley. He is about the same size and been taking enough 1st team reps to finally get her done.
My lineup is based on highest ceiling.
LT Broderick Jones/Chad Lindberg/Xavier Truss
LG Jamaree Salyer/Clay Webb
C Sedrick Van Pran/Warren Ericson
RG Justin Shaffer/Tate Ratledge
RT Amarius Mims/Warren Mcclendon

If any of the Olinemen live up to expectations the offense will be balanced and average well over 40 points a game.

If he can win the RG spot, then he deserves to start.

I agred. Salyer was a better tackle than truss. That is why i said that truss should be working at RG.

Ummm. No. He was a guard playing tackle and it showed.

quote:

No reason to move him.

Lots of reasons to move salyer. Unfortunately, a lot of coaches try to fit their best lineman at LT. We would be better putting the best LT at LT. It isnt Salyer or Truss. Right now, i like mcclendon at LT until one of the younger pups can move him off that spot.

Wynn was too small for guard (got pushed around). He was the perfect athlete for tackle (going up against smaller, quicker guys). Got him a 1st round grade.

Agree to disagree on parts of this but I agree with you on the whole. If Truss earns RG he can have it (I’m assuming in this scenario you have Salyer at LG) I have nothing against Truss. If he’s the best guy then please play him. But Schaffer didn’t come back to ride the bench so it’ll be tough. Ideally BJ or Mims is good enough to earn a tackle job with McClendon at the other tackle.

I dont doubt it. But wanting to be the best doesnt make shaffer the best. He is far from a polished product.
