I can see the point, but I would put Walker first probably just due to my age. IMHO it seems to me, again due to my age, that Walker had a more profound impact on the statue of UGA than Stetson did in the fact Walker's contribution seemed to propel UGA into upper echelon of CFB whereas prior to him, UGA was just another of the hundred plus schools competing every year. Those 3 years Walker played made UGA a household name which it was not before. It's not a hill I would die on, but it's just I'm old enough recency bias doesn't come into play. I will readily admit I enjoyed Stetson's tenure more than Walkers: probably because I'm old enough to realize just how much it meant whereas when Walker was playing I was just in High School and didn't realize just how special it was for UGA to play in a NC. 40 years of the Goff, Donnan, and Richt Eras brought it into pristine focus.

I was nine in 1980 and thought it would be like 1980-82 forever.

Stetson must be top dawg.

geez. No, just...no. Mind you I'm not appalled at stetson's inclusion, I'm perfectly fine with him being on there. You'd honestly have to work harder to make a case to exclude him than you would to put him on. So no issues at all with stet. But ABOVE herschel? Like..literally the best ever? Omg where do I start?

Stetson was never the best player on his own team. Not even really close for that matter. He never really sniffed all american or national recognition until his final super senior season when he finished 4th in heisman voting which was of course awesome. How many teams went into a week saying "guys, I've been losing sleep here...whatever we do, we absolutely MUST, at ALL COSTS, stop stetson bennett"? Zero is the answer. Stetson was really really amazingly good on some really amazingly good teams. Some individual plays we can point to are all-time legendary in UGA lore. No one disputes that. But that brings us to Herschel...

Herschel is arguably the best player CFB has ever seen. Herschel was the best player in all of america from the first game he ever played in all the way through to his last. If it weren't for the arcane and archaic heisman rules that existed at the time he would be a 3-time Heisman winner. If he had stayed all 4 years he would have set records that wouldn't even be achievable even with todays' ridiculous 16 game schedules. As it stands he is still in the top 15 of all time rushers despite only playing 3 years with 11 game seasons! Remember bowl stats didn't count back then. He was mythical. He was larger than life. He was transcendent. He took a fledgling program that went 20-13-1 in the 3 years preceding him, that included only 1 season with a bowl game (a loss that left the team ranked 15th) and single-handedly led them to a national title and 3 straight sugar bowls. If we had even a tiny bit better defense for 15 minutes in 1982 we are 2x national champs in 3 seasons. Ask any objective observer that's over the age of 50 and they will still tell you Herschel is the best of all time....30 years from now not a soul will ever even begin to think that stetson is the best anything of all time.

I want to reiterate here at the end that this is not a knock on stetson, who has set multiple UGA records and is a DGD to the nth degree. It's more so a response to the utter lunacy to suggest that anyone should place higher than Herschel on a list such as this. There is no other, the real conversation is just "who do you think should be numbers 2-4?"

Doesn’t Walker get some dings for literally starting the leave College early thing? He is still on the list obviously. He is not to blame, but the crazy that surrounded our program kinda backfired on us once he left and we paid for it.

Herschel might get dinged, but he basically played the same number of seasons as Stetson

If you’re going to include Kirby how do you not include Dooley and FFS Erk?

There should be a coaches and players Mt Rushmore. One doesn’t have enough heads.

If he was a normal human yes. But Walker is still regarded as one of the best CFB players ever and won us the championship in 80. He is the universal #1.

After thinking about it, players:

Herschel
Bennett
Bowers
Champ? Roquan? Pollack? Butler?

We need a defensive player but I can’t think of an all world guy that is a shoe in.

Non players:
Dooley
Erk
Kirby (yeah he played but you know what I mean)
Munson

I feel really good about the second group. Erk:

quote:

"By our own definition, a Junkyard Dog is a dog completely dedicated to his task, that of defending his goal line. Further, he is very often a reject (from the offense) or the runt of the litter. Nobody wants him, and he is hungry. We had three walk-ons, four QBs, and three running backs in our original Junkyard Dog starting cast, which averaged 208 pounds across the front. In short, a Junkyard Dog is one who must stretch and strain all of his potential just to survive. Then he can think about being good."

Not even an honorable mention for Nick Chubb?

Damn, would have easily surpassed HW in rushing if not for said injury (I get that HW did it in 3)

Also a outstanding NFL career.

Stetson has an almost hour long highlight reel, I recommend you go back and refresh your memory. The number of improbable plays he executed will answer the Beck question once and for all. Stetson took ten yards losses and scored tds and got first downs, Beck took ten yards losses or made poor decisions...... Stetson did it far more than you remember, watch the full highlight and compare it to anyone who played the position in college....

Yes, Stetson is the best player to ever come out of UGA as a college QB, hell he may be in the top 2-3 college qbs all time in meaningful production. Now others had measurable that lead them to the first round in the NFL but not sure we win either of the two without Stetson even with the defense.

I agree. 4400 total yards and 37 TDs in 2023 should speak for itself.

The fourth quarter he had against Ohio State was the most epic and consequential performance in Georgia football history. Mailman couldn't miss!

swap Kirby for Lewis Grizzard & you got the classic "glory days" UGA Mt. Rushmore. Throw in some Loran Smith articles & the country club vibe & it's the UGA culture I grew up with

For modern guys imo (after 2000):

Brock Bowers
Stetson Bennett
David Pollack
Nick Chubb
COACH Kirby Smart

Agree with the guy saying we need 8-10 or more...Aaron Murray, Roquan Smith, Nolan Smith, Jalon Walker, AJ Green have all been some of the best ever to play for UGA. And maybe a coaches Mt. Rushmore too??

Bennett’s best moment IMO was in the 21 Natty when he fricked up and flung the ball when he was getting tackled and they called it a pick (which was bullshite BTW).

He then comes back and scores a TD to put us in the lead with back to back to back clutch passes.

“I wasn’t going to be the reason we lost this game”

fricking epic son.

fricking epic.
