Honestly, I can't. Mason seems like an average QB who patiently waited his turn to start. He doesn't appear to have the arm strength of Murray so I don't expect him to be able to stretch the field with down-field passes. He doesn't have as much athletic ability as Murray who also is not a dual-threat QB so I don't think Mason will be making many plays with his legs or even buying much extra time to extend plays.

What we need with Mason:
1. Take care of the ball. Don't try to do more than he is capable of.
2. Establish the run and if that is not feasible against stout defenses at least complete short passes to simulate a running game.
3. Crisp, well diguised play action passes that get our play-makers in space.
4. Play smart. Step into all passes even when a receiver is not open and just throw out of bounds.

I think as a whole, we need to see more exposure of him, and I believe he takes a small step forward from last years two games after taking all the reps with the #1s. Smart play calling is going to be a big part of his success and we must capitalize on red zone offense this year. We have some good skilled players that we need to rely on. TG is a beast!

I agree, although in fairness, not a whole lot of QB's would have started over 11.

He was a back up because there was a conspiracy by Richt. Murray sucked. Fire Richt!

Preseason lists are based on experience and Hutson does not have enough to warrant a rating. What I care about is post season ratings and expect him to be in the conversation then.

We have all seen what preseason predictions mean.

Exactly. HM could have started on a few SEC teams this year, but from his stand point, he was unfortunately behind one of the best QBs to ever play in the SEC

The direction for this thread was supposed to be for yall to carpet bomb the link with reasons he is better than marshall, bo, dak, et al.

Begin now.

I expect him to be good enough for UGA to have a very productive offense. Just take care of the ball and give it to our athletes in space. He'll be fine. He doesn't need to be Aaron Murray.

Oh. He has a great QB name. Our receivers are really good so he should pick up some easy yards.

Brett Favre was a backup when he was with the Falcons...and that was when the Falcons were horrible....so....

..not to mention that most QBs would have been back ups to Murray. The TRUE question to ask in this scenario is...who was he a backup to?
Although, I THINK I understand and agree with your point...we should be cautiously optimistic?

I got it...you want us to go to the Rant and make a case for Mason. My bad...it's hard. While Mason MIGHT turn out to be a better passer than Marshall, I think Marshall does a great job at what is asked of him. Even though this will be unpopular, I think Marshall was the correct choice for QB on the preseason thread.

Sorry.

Aaron Rodgers was a backup for 3 years.

He also didn't even get a scholarship offer to any D1 schools out of high school. He ultimately went to a junior college (JUCO), and after a year there he was recruited by Cal and was then a backup there for half a season before becoming the starter when the starting QB got injured.

Just sayin, one of the best QB's in the history of this game was a backup... twice... and had zero stars next to his name coming out of high school.

I'd like to give a defense for HM but I just can't. Not because his stats weren't good last year, but because I haven't seen enough of him to say he's more deserving of the #1 slot than Marshall, who helped his team win the SECCG and came up just short of a MNC. I don't like Marshall, but I just can't defend HM right now, though I'd like to.

I'm not interested in comparing dick sizes on an internet message board.

Mason is great at what he does.
Put him in the pistol or shotgun.
Let him see the field and make his throws.

With everything in front of him, he can absolutely make the reads and throws. He can protect the football while in the gun.

If we want to win, we are going to have to simplify our formations a bit (less under center). But we did that with DJ Shockley and won the seccg with it.

I don't think anybody is arguing that Mason can't get the job done. (At least, I am not) I like what I saw of Mason last year. When things went badly (GT and Nebraska) he didn't panic. he brought us back. I THINK he will have a very good year and Georgia will too. However, making him a preseason all SEC pick is another matter, entirely. I also believe that Bobo has shown that he can tailor a game plan around his QB, so I expect a pretty good if not special year.

Name a better, more proven qb in sec for 14, besides marshall, if you are doing a preseason list?
