Clearly.
While it's certainly ironic to give Lanning DCOTY immediately on the heels of the D's worst performance, it's hard to argue with results of 12/13 games.

We benefited from an insanely easy schedule this year. Our defense was exposed when we played an elite offense last Saturday. What other elite offenses have we seen?

Look, when the spotlight was on the D, they didn't execute. I'd say the blame squarely lies on them. Just like it does on uninspired coaching, sub-par OL play, impotent front 7 pressure on the opposing QB, and questionable decision-making by #13 for us.
That said, it doesn't change the fact that we had 3 shutouts and averaged less than a TD per game.

How do you know it wasn't Muschamp in his analyst role that had the idea to switch up all of our schemes to try and out-out-scheme Alabama? And maybe it's Lanning in the conference room right now with the "I told you so's" You don't know.

Let me put it another way. Muschamp is only an analyst. Lanning is the DC. When all is said and done with calling plays, you know who gets the last word in right? Kirby. Muschamp is not the type to try to mix things up as an analyst. I'm sure he had an opinion but he did not get final say and neither did Lanning. Again, when it comes to the D, Kirby has the final say and we all know it. You dont see Saban running up and down the sideline screaming and yelling. Thats because he lets his coaches do their job. Kirby needs to do the same.

Defense was good but not legendary as many conjectured.
They absolutely folder last weekend and looked pathetic quite frankly.
Worst defensive game all year and it was most important and most challenging. Grats to lanning but...meh
