You and I are thinking a lot alike. I had an opportunity in Idaho a year or so ago and couldn’t get my wife to bite on it.

"Even that bastion of upper-class whitedom that you call home, Oconee county, isn't going to be safe forever."

Ha ha. I laughed at that. Its actually an extremely accurate description.

If you don’t mind me asking, what are the topics the Republicans should “shift to the center” on?

One interesting thing I learned today was that there are a lot more people in Cherokee County than I had previously imagined. 100k+ voters... Had no idea.

Ha! Try driving north on 575 during rush hour, you'll quickly realize how populated it's become up here. Looks like we saved the state's arse with that turnout. Cherokee is one of the last Republican strongholds in the metro area.

"If you don’t mind me asking, what are the topics the Republicans should “shift to the center” on?"

First off I was president of college republicans in College, member of Young Americans for Freedom. So my leanings tend to be solid right leaning.

With that said. I am not a Republican, registered independent, even though I have never voted for a democrat in my life. I feel the modern republican party has turned its back on people like me. I am a Reagan conservative... Anyway I digress.

To answer your question, the world is changing and if we dont want people like Obama and Pelosi the Republican party does need to change.
So my opinion (which is not worth much)

Some social issues. Gay Marriage for example. Who cares. Come off the Pulpit a bit and I am an avid christian who attends Athens Church. I personally could care less about Gay Marriage, let them be miserable like the rest of us ;-). Get the government out of the bedroom and stop legislating morality. So long it is two consenting adults and doesn't infringe on others rights to the pursuit of life, liberty, etc etc

You would be surprised to hear me say this as I am an AVID gun owner and 2nd Amendment guy. But what is wrong with some common sense gun laws like background checks at Gun shows or ban the sale of firearms to people on a No Fly list, etc. 2 week waiting period. I have Several "assault" rifles. I would not be upset to have to wait 2 weeks. Almost all gun owners I know are in favor of some common sense changes that doesnt infringe on our rights to bear arms as law abiding citizens. I support the ban on Fully automatic weapons for example.

Get back on what is important and less on what is not. Less social legislation and more fiscal/defense

Less Taxes
Strong National Defense
Border Security
MINIMIZE government.

OK I hate internet political debate and I got suckered in. Bring on the down votes.

I don't think this is a socialist shift... these are moderate to right-leaning white women in the suburbs who are so disgusted with Trump that their minds are all fricked up.

I love Trump. But he repulses so many women that would otherwise be voting for peace and prosperity through common sense immigration reform, lower taxes, high employment, wage growth, strong military, peace in Korea, the fall of ISIS, fair trade, and stock market gains.

I'm actually pretty much right in line with you on all points. I would also add, I don't vote on abortion. As a Christian, people know where I stand on it. But Roe v. Wade isn't going anywhere and it's not my place to make decisions for anyone else. People choose to do the wrong thing all the time and this is no different. Better resources and alternatives to abortion need to be made available, but at the end of the day, it goes back to your point on legislating morality. You simply can't do it and it's foolish to build your platform on it.

I also own guns and I, too, am totally okay with some common sense gun laws being brought into play.

I read through a lot of fibonaccisquared's posts and have to say, he and I think almost exactly alike politically. If only we could get a candidate who wasn't so extreme to one side or the other; pandering to old white baws and their guns or inner city black folks and their failing school systems. There seems to be no in-between and I feel like both parties are trying explicitly to avoid such.

That’s me. Parts of Hwy 92 are eight lanes across. People are leaving Cobb and moving to Cherokee

This law isn’t changing anytime soon. Not many people are fighting to legalize FA weapons so not much of a point here

I bought an AR-15 at a gun show a couple of years ago. And...surprise, surprise...I had to go thru the FBI check they do on the computers to buy it.

We have approximately 10,000 gun laws on the books already. If they were enforced as they should be, you wouldn't have to worry about more common sense gun laws.

Holy shite this drives me nuts. Have you ever been to a gun show?

99% of the people there are dealers and require a background check. You can’t get a .22 at a gun show without a check. The only people that don’t do a background check are individuals or private sellers that rent a table. These guys usually sell old shotguns, deer rifles and knives.

This gun show loophole schtick is a crock of shite and propaganda.

If it’s different in other states let me know.

I'm also not pulling figures and stories out of my arse just to make a point.

I am a retired federal law enforcement officer who STILL had to go thru the proper background check at a gun show to buy a rifle. The 'no checks at gun shows' thing is a myth in Georgia. It's both a state and federal law. These dealers lose their licenses and get prosecuted if they fail to comply.

Fair enough. I stand corrected.
As a CHL holder I find it extremely easy at Gun shows to get the gun I want to buy (This was Texas, I have not been here in Georgia) which may be why I have that misconception...

But if that is the case, I stand corrected.

Ah, well, Texas is a whole different animal. The only state in the Union where it's still legal to have an open container in the car.

Then you bought it from someone with an FFL. Private sales don't require a background check, and many private sales take place at gun shows, hence the term 'gun show loophole' but in actuality it is more like the 'private sales loophole'. It needs to be closed. Will that prevent all illegal dealings- no. Criminals will get guns from other criminals either way. However that will help curb the sale to felons or others who exploit that loophole by finding some innocent, well intentioned individual selling their gun at a gunshow who has no idea that the person on the other end has bad intentions. That is what I would consider incredibly 'common sense'.
