Damn, is there anything you see as a bright spot?

I'm honestly struggling to find one.
If you have any encouragement to offer, I'm open to optimistic insight. I'm just feeling kind of low about our situation going forward and we seem to be in bad need of some good news.

No. If it exists and there’s a possibility to take a loss then it’s relevant.

If players aren’t going to give a shite then I agree. It’s better not to play then to play and lose.

I think this will happen eventually. It'll be a slow, gradual decline but eventually, sponsors will stop sponsoring something if no one watches it, and fans will eventually tune them out as more and more players skip them.

You might be right but isn’t the natural order of things for the sponsorship costs to start dropping first? It seems now sponsors are paying more than ever so I just wonder at what point they say no

Disagree completely.Coaches like the extra
4 weeks of practice and it's a very good way to get a look at the younger players going into spring and fall practice.

The Bowls are programming for ESPN and part of the $500 million CFB playoff deal.People still watch the games and they won't be going away anytime soon.

Bowls are massive money makers. They are not going anywhere in the current business model.

When I played, Coach Dooley made $240k. Now, support staff for the Assistant Coaches make that... could it be, that the greed of our fans.... “Demanding Excellence” ... “Championships only matter”... “we need the best coaches and facilities “...

Look at this year. Our team was SEC East Champ. Beat our top 4 Rivals. Had some great and close games.

Yet, there was a large element that was miserable all season. Greed has mortally wounded College Football. The fans are complicit.

If you could Go back in time and ask anyone what a great season would be... the answer would be the same. Beating our rivals... now, since greed and lack of emotional intelligence is pervasive, we need to have playoffs... more teams... we need to know who the a Champion is....

..but ya, it is 20 year old players who didn’t create this abortion who are ruining it all....

Greed as in the quest for a better way to determine a national champion. The non-playoff bowls have become the victim. High draft picks skipping such games is a problem. These type games aren’t relevant to them. It’s making final season rankings less meaningful than the final playoff rankings.

Usually there were 2 maybe 3 bowls that mattered, all the rest have always been meaningless exhibitions created by the need for tourists dollars in December and January.

Players once cared about the lower bowls, and the fans did as well. They don’t anymore, and the fans don’t go.

That seems true but there are many times the bowls today than the good old days and plenty of schools still appreciate them.

We are just a bigger nation population wise and more schools have more resources.

Attendance may be down but there is still a lot people going to more bowls than ever.

Yes, there was a time when beating your rivals and going to the Citrus Bowl was a very good season. That was back when college football was a regional sport.

For example, have you ever heard of the Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy? It is presented to the best team in the Eastern United States. Back in the day, it was a HUGE deal to win it. Now, no one gives a shite about it.

Yep. Remember when we used to get excited about beating Florida/Tennessee/GT and playing on New Years Day.

Business has changed and so have our expectations. With the way we recruit, our current resources, and national presence, anything short of playoffs SHOULD be considered disappointing.

Bowl games aren't really about attendance at all. It's all about them eyeballs on TV sets and that sweet, sweet advertising dollar.

That’s what I don’t get.

Before the playoffs, there were still only a couple of bowls in true national championship implications. 95% of the teams out there weren’t playing to be national champions...they were playing for pride and to win.

Now...same situation except we have playoffs instead of the BCS...but these other bowls are ignored. We’re in the Sugar two years in a row and you’d think we’re loading up for Shrieveport.

I think part of that is that our competition in the East is weak and we’re expected to win those games. Winning the east used to mean beating Meyer, Spurrier, whoever was clowning it up at TN, etc. There was a lot of build up and angst going into those games.

That shite is till important to me though.
