Kirby said he was surprised they were that successful in his second year. He said he had a 3 year plan and expected to win a national title year 3. So almost getting there in year 2 was a major overachievement.

Personally I thought it would take 4 or 5 years(all recruits his guys). Glad to hear he thinks we could get it done this upcoming year as I've heard quite a few uga fans say they think we may trend slightly downward.

Counted this year as a bonus, but Zebras had other plans.

Way ahead of schedule.

Absolutely expected a big year in '17...no reason not to.

We"'ll have a drop off next year but still expect a trip to Atlanta.

Next year with our defense losing a lot. We will have a down year. But thanks to the sec east not being so great. We should make it to Atlanta next season and possibly the year after.

Yep, after Eason went down and considering the state of our OL from the previous season, I don't think many thought we would make it to the NCG. We are losing a lot so I'm thinking 2019 might be your year to get back to the NCG.

That didn't happen.

It damn well did lol. He said he came to uga with a 3 year plan. By year three he said he expected to win a national title.

I disagree that last year was "gravy". We should've won that damn game, and I'm really hoping that doesn't go down as Richt's 2012 SECCG "well, imagine if that play goes differently".

I would expect us to take a slight drop in 18, but if this staff is confident in what they've got, then I won't question it. Need to replace three elite LBs and the best nose in the conference, which won't be easy, but there's talent there.

Good news - offense should be the best we've had in years and schedule is pretty forgiving outside of one trip to LSU.

Mullen at UF kinda scares me more than I think it should.*

He typically manages a good offense, and if he finds some pieces to run with then they could have a pulse again.

*my whole life has been nothing but Jacksonville pain and misery and one year won’t fix it.

Think back on how Mullen has performed against a Kirby Smart defense... then think about where UF is talent wise right now... then think about how Kirby Smart is lapping the field in the recruiting game... then just think about Mullen's record against ranked teams... something that Smart seems poised to ensure we *are* with the talent that we are accumulating...

By no means am I saying that UF is going to be some cakewalk opponent forever... but I don't see Mullen as "scary" there either. I think in year 1, he has a big project ahead of him... he's got to identify if either a) Emory Jones is ready to be a college QB as a true freshman (me: I don't see it... too much mental game development required, and not enough size to run Mullen's offense and hold up for a season)... or b) if any of the QBs on Florida's roster right now are suitable fits for at least a season... (me: maybe Trask? otherwise, I think they don't have an answer). Meanwhile, think about all the defensive talent they've lost over the last few seasons, and look at what they're bringing in. They are going to lose on the LOS... on both sides of the ball... Something we haven't been consistently better than Florida at in a long time.

I'm *very* curious to see how patient UF fans are with Mullen. The upside for them was that Jimbo left, otherwise, they were in danger of having really bad matchups against both Georgia *and* FSU most years... with FSU changing coaches also, it at least levels that out a bit for now...

What about winning 4 out of 7? Does that help any?

I personally thought we’d make it to ATL but not be able to get past Bama. Winning the SEC was a pleasant surprise and the Rose Bowl was epic.

Had AL beaten AU and made it to ATL - now I wonder if we wouldn’t have had a better shot than to get them after a months rest and a win over a pretty lackluster Clemson team.

Oh well.

This year’s game needs to be a W to soothe my fears for a while.

After 2018, with how Kirby recruits, we’re gonna be a fricking monster in the East. I won’t worry about who we play 2019 and onward...

That's the thing though... what about 2018 UF scares you... legitimately. It's not impossible that they surprise people and are better than expected, but they have *serious* questions to answer. We beat them *soundly* in 17... even with a step back on defense, I don't see us struggling against their offense, and our offense should at worst be about on par with what we did in 17. Not predicting a 40 point blow-out at this point, but I certainly am not thinking we'll somehow be anything less than favored in the matchup. And if Kirby has shown us anything, it's that he has the ability to get the team to buy into his vision now... we need the next group of leaders to step up and start chopping wood.

Florida will be much better next year. Players back from from suspension, transfers, and a good recruiting class will have their talent at a completely different level in 2018.

Mullen and Grantham will also be an upgrade.

We should have better talent and coaching. But they play the games on saturday, anyway.

I am not buying any of this schedule talk and here is why, you don’t go to your job and say in three years I want a promotion and then get it in two years and claim to be ahead of schedule. If you do you are setting yourself up for failure because if you don’t get that promotion at the end of three years you feel like you failed.

Instead you focus on doing the best that you can in your current role and try to learn as much as possible and let that take care of itself.

When Jeremy Pruitt came to Georgia he would scream at the players not to look at the scoreboard and to focus on giving maximum effort and doing your job on each play.

I think Kirby is building with the mindset of it will happen when it happens and we will take care of coaching and recruiting on a daily basis to make the magic happen as quickly as possible.

He even said as much in the ESPN interview sitting beside Nick Saban before the NC. He said his teams success won’t be defined based on winning or not winning championships or games. There definition of success will be defined by how well they play. That means we could win by 40 and could play poorly and be a failure if we don’t play well.

Players back from from suspension

This will definitely matter... they were sorely lacking bodies in general due to all the suspensions

quote:

transfers

The Ole Miss transfer will probably get the waiver (if it hasn't already been granted), but is there any reason to believe the Ohio State receiver will? Really not sure.

quote:

a good recruiting class

Maybe... They're at 17th nationally right now, with room for 9 more if they can fill their class... they are in it for a couple of highly ranked guys (NPF for example), but I don't think they'll finish any better than about tenth... If they close with NPF, Copeland *and* Gouraige, probably enough to move them inside the top ten with an overall score around 270ish and probably a rank of 8-10. Take away one or more of those and they start to fall a fair amount, as the next recruits up are in the 200s or lower.

The end problem with all of that is that with few exceptions, much like we saw with our really good 2017 class, most of those kids aren't going to be contributing at a *high* level in 2018... Fromm and Thomas obviously exceptions, and I'd expect that UF will have some guys who bring it early as well, but they're also losing some pretty significant players in:

Taven Bryan, Antonio Callaway (debatable I guess, but if he's playing, he's a weapon), and Eddie Pineiro - an absolute weapon in the kicking game. Not to mention Marcell Harris not petitioning to return for a 6th season after the injury and the senior losses... or the transfers out due to the legal issues.

I'd anticipate they have a better roster in 2018 than they were able to put on the *field* in 2017, but the idea that Mullen is somehow "scary" there already is misdirected in my opinion. They're an SEC team and they have SEC caliber players... it's not like lining up in Jacksonville is going to be playing the sisters of the poor... we will have to bring it. But I'm not looking at it as any sort of "intimidating" matchup in any real capacity going into 2018... which is a different feeling than most of the past 20+ years.

I don't necessarily agree that Grantham is a substantial upgrade over Shannon... but I suppose only time will tell on that one. Mullen definitely an upgrade over Mac... no question there.

Yeah... ultimately this. I just think it's fair to say that there isn't anything about 2018 UF that should be "scary" for Georgia fans.

I'm excited about the prospects we're plugging in on defense. I'm thinking top 10 defense, especially if Patrick is strait and plays to his ability.

Only 5 players are returning. Scarlett being the main one but they still have a long way to go to get the felonies dropped.

You do realize the Florida States Attorney for Alachua County is also a part-time instructor in the UF law school at $240K a year, don't you? How do you think they get pretrial diversion for major felony cases?
