First.. give them credit. That QB is damn good. They also have a physical RB and line. Put their QB on Bama and those fricktards would be as in love with him as they are Tua.

They had a smart defensive game plan. They did a bunch of run blitzes and stunts on the line to stop our running game. Even then, we still ran pretty well on them. They were on man coverage a lot this game and that is why we had so many pass TDs. I honestly think we could have thrown it a lot more and beat them by a lot more. It appeared we were trying to impose our will on them and break them. We did that in spite of having some nice match ups down field. They were tough enough to not quite let us do it.

I’m not 100% against our game plan as far as trying to impose our will. I think we knew we had the passes if we had to have them. Our receivers are playing great football. I love these tall and fast and physical receivers we have out there and I love they are catching the football. Of course, Fromm made a lot of nice throws. I think we are just scratching the surface with our passing game. With this crew and Fromm, we could go out and throw it 60 times and put up huge numbers. That goes against Smart’s roots of controlling the LOS and imposing our will.

Great assessment. I agree with your thoughts overall. I was honestly impressed with Mizzou. They are a much more physical team than they have been in recent years.

My only point of divergence is your thoughts on our/Kirby's philosophy. I understand the desire to be a ball control team. I understand the desire to impose our will. But, unlike last season, I think the strength of the roster is to play more open and to push the ball vertically down the field.

One could say that a win is a win, but the problem I have is that we come out of a game like today and it is hard for me to determine if Fromm was as poor as the eye test indicated today, if he was handcuffed by our game plan, or something in between.

Even last season, it was extremely frustrating to watch us continuously run into loaded boxes. Teams don't respect the middle-field passing game at all right now. Hopefully the coaching staff will do some self scouting and realize that we won't reach our potential this year via the grunt and punt.

No doubt it's the strength of our team. It's somewhat of a reversal of last year's RB group compared to our slot/WR group and I wish Chaney would make adjustments accordingly.Still have to run the ball but do we need to continously run up the middle on 3rd and long?Is a screen play not in the playbook? We could have scorched
them numerous times had we attempted.

Dooley called a far superior game than Chaney IMO.

And I think they did it last year after the 1st AU game...Chaney called a completely different game his 2nd time around.

To be fair to Chaney, Fromm missed a lot of throws. The INT wasn't Fromm's fault.
But there were a ton of open receivers that Fromm flat out missed.
And some of the big money downs in the red zone were tough throws... but we failed to execute them. That is more on the qb to put a tough throw on the money.

Fromm had an "average" day and he still put up 3 long TD throws and 260 yards. When he isn't particularly accurate, it gets a little silly to assume that flinging it would solve the world's problems and avoid punts.

The biggest difference in the second game against AU wasn't the plays that were called. They were the same plays.

We just mixed up first down with more of our normal passes as opposed to the 9 straight first down runs like we tried in the first attempt.

It felt like the offensive playcalling never let our team get into a rhythm. When one thing was going well, we'd change it up. It was only when we consistently started passing on 1st/2nd down that the offense started humming. The strength of this team on offense is our WRs - hopefully we start playing to it when teams sell out to stop the run like Mizzou. I am very impressed with the trio of Hardman, Ridley, and Holloman.

Not really...not when he mixes up the sequence and throws much more to our RB's the 2nd game.He called a different game and it was the entire point... never said he redesigned the playbook.

Thank goodness for the punt block and scoop & score or yesterday's game could have been a disaster

We played to stop the pass. Kirby wasn’t going to let them beat us in the air with Lock. He took that away. We also still scored 40. Fromm didn’t look as sharp. Probably because he hasn’t played a complete game all season until Saturday. First 4 games are in the books. You’ll see Fromm for 4 quarters from here on out.

When you say "impose our will", I immediately think "run between the tackles".

Last year Chubb was a run between the tackles type of back. Michel was so versatile he could do everything including run between the tackles and do it well.

This year, IMO, we have one back that can excel running between the tackles and that is Holyfield. Everybody else, IMO, needs to get the ball in space including/especially Swift and Cook.

I don't get continually trying to run between the tackles if it doesn't fit our personnel. To my novice football mind it seems we are wasting our talent.

I think our group of receivers is really really good. I would love for Chaney/Smart to use them more and get Cook and Swift the ball in space.

So yesterday, I didn't get trying to consistently run the ball up to the middle right at their best player Terry Beckner. Especially when they just gave up 600 yards passing versus Purdue. I didn't get the game plan. I was scratching my head.

I think Smart feels we have the Oline to do it. We have done it every game so far, including against a pretty good USC team.
When you ‘can’ do this, you all but assure yourself of a win. It has a cumulative affect that wears down the defense not just on each drive, but for the game.

We sat on the ball at the end of the game and likely could have scored again if need be. Had we played to our plan, we would have had a 4 minute TD drive there towards the end, which we didn’t get. I guess we aren’t quite able to impose our will on everyone yet.

Again, though, give some credit to Mizzou. They were coached well for this game.

I like your assessment, and I agree. I have some concerns with the pass rush though. Besides walker getting good pressure, we seem slow off the snap. I mean only 1 sack thus far is a problem.

I think early in the game, we were pushing the pocket and keeping him from running and maybe having one or two after him. Later in the game, we went harder after him. You don’t want to sell out on every down with a mobile QB.

It seemed to me that we felt better having an additional guy in coverage than sending five after Lock on most downs, and they had alot of max protect going on. Sending the fifth guy against 6 or seven blockers wouldn't have necessarily paid off, leaving only five or six in coverage vs Lock.

The Kirby/Saban MO has always been to drop into coverage and get pressure with 4 (3 down plus OLB or 4 down).

I was actually pleased with our pressure Saturday. Two sacks and two forced fumbles against Drew Lock and a good OL. Keep in mind that Lock hadn't been sacked at all on the season prior to our game.

We started out slow on sacks last year. It turned out all right.

Real good assessment. I felt like I was watching 2016 in the first half. Most time we tried to run between tackles we got stuffed. I really hope Kirby and Chaney are smart enough to know this game plan is not going to work against LSU and Auburn. We need to get the ball out in space like we did in the SECCG. Also, it seems like we could us the play action pass a lot more - run the ball up the middle a few times; then play action and drop 30 yards downfield.

I want the toss sweep to come back. That play was our old reliable bread and butter for years.
