Our talent level has fallen off a cliff… we’ll see I guess.

In theory a candidate for center down the road but I thought the same thing. Just another soft big frame that we can “coach up”. The problem is we underachieved with talent and our coaching on the Oline. What happens when it’s our coaching without talent…

Brooks Austin talks about bargain shopping and how we have to go bargain shopping sometimes to fill out the roster. This guy's whole family apparently are diehard Georgia fans, and this screams bargain shopping. The days of cherrypicking O lineman apparently are over. Lineman are too expensive and we don't have the payroll.

Bargain shopping sucks, but it's not as bad since the scholarship limit is 105 now instead of 85 and all teams have a little more margin of error and can have more hits and misses.

SEC did not agree to up the limit so we are still at 85

It’s a change in philosophy. Sign more loyal guys close to home that are less likely to transfer

I made this same assertion back in early May. Crowknowsbest and Kneehigh disagreed.

Not saying that we don't recruit nationally, but up to this point the class has several local, hopefully undervalued, 3* recruits.

I disagree that local guys are going to be loyal because they’re local. How often have we talked about the struggles of UGA to “own the state”, even pre NIL. It’s irrational to think that was true but now we all of a sudden enjoy some state loyalty ensuring top talent passes on meaningful money with any frequency. If UGA can’t pay market for top talent, some undervalued “loyal” 3* is unlikely to save us.

Even if UGA did prove to be adept at finding underappreciated 3*s, what happens when a Miami comes in and offers a few million dollars after their sophomore year? Maybe UGA pays up to keep them, but they aren’t staying for a 3* salary.

UGA’s only hope at getting a huge discount is proving out elite pro development and winning big. Both will be hard without winning some of these money wars.

Maybe a side effect of NIL is that it creates fluctuation at the top of the sport as rosters degrade and enhance. Everybody talks about how much UGA spends on retention, which makes sense given how highly thought of our upperclassmen have been for the past few years. Spending a lot on retention means you have less to spend on acquisition (and also don’t want to upset a good apple cart), so your team gradually weakens as your upperclassmen cycle out. However, as your upperclassmen group gets weaker, you have to spend less on retention, so you can devote more funding to acquisition, both freshmen and transfers.

Just food for thought.

You're right on all of these counts, but I wasn't referring to discounts. I just feel like if Kirby signs local players, it just gives them one less reason to leave, because they're already home. Still gotta pay to play though.

That’s only gonna get you so far and quite honestly, a lazy fricking excuse. You don’t see Bama or OSU being limited to the states of Ohio or Alabama. This is a new era and Kirby will be Kirby. I feel like UGA can pay players but won’t pay like the other schools “just because”. Just because mindset will put us back to a 8-4 9-3 program. If that’s what we’ve accepted then so be it. All it takes is a few mediocre seasons before donors start to rumble.

I would not be surprised if UGA offered a 6’2” 205 4* safety sophomore out of ECHS

Two teams that UGA out recruited last year. And Bama is a terrible comparison. They have 6 recruits and 5 of them are from Ga and Alabama.

The counter argument to that is players from Georgia who leave the state to play in college and are more likely to get homesick and nostagic, so let's wait for them to prove themselevs and then snatch them out of the portal. Maybe, maybe now. Who really knows at this point?

Have any players that left the state and came back worked out lately? I feel like those guys usually leave their program for playing time and they couldn’t play here
