I remember that the Patriots roster included the highest percentage of players who graduated college and the highest percentage who were college team captains.
It isn't all physical. Belichick, Saban and Smart look for intelligent leaders. Mark Richt recruited too many numskulls.

I think CMR took on too many recruits as projects - both on and off the field. His intentions were noble, but he wasn't always able I get through to the guys, hence the attrition.

Kirby recruited a guy who got kicked off the team for domestic violence before he even played a down.
He's just recruiting more talented players, and then Sony, Nick, Davin, and Lorenzo to stay around meant there were leaders in the program. That's the biggest difference.

think Quay will find his home at OLB, just from a skills and mental aptitude standpoint... could be wrong, but I don't see him spending significant time inside.
You could be correct. I suspect that kirby is moving towards recruiting more hybrid type linebackers. Towards the end of this season we deployed a lot of 4-3 looks and generally were more multiple in our fronts. Guys like Quay enable that because they are versatile enough to play inside or outside in a variety of fronts.

What are the chances we can land a QB this cycle with Fromm and Fields in the room? How would you like to sell that? Well, just know you are two plays away from being the man. Kirby is the man, but that would be a tough freakin sell.

There will be a low 4-Star or 3-Star kid who knows he isn’t a NFL prospect and will be willing to come in, redshirt, ride the pine, and maybe get the chance to helm the team as a redshirt Jr, while also having a shot at winning a national title at some point in his time at UGA. Are we going to land a top-100 QB? Probably not, but we will still be able to bring in a guy to provide quality depth.

Kirby will pull some rabbit out of the hat, and we will get a top 10 QB and a low 4 star QB to sign next year

Probably need to sign 2 of those types tbh

Even with Stetson and the kid this year that is supposed to be a replica of him? I would think guys like them would help keep us away from having to take two Qb's in a cycle.

Yes. You'd like to have at least 4 scholarship QBs. I hope Stetson Bennett and whoever else are more than just scout team guys, but there's no reason to rely on walk-ons for depth. I'd argue that it's reckless.

Yeah, given Kirby's recruiting prowess, I don't think it'll come to that, but were it to, "reckless" is a good word.

Would say there were significantly bigger needs in this past class, so made sense to focus on just Fields (in addition to Fromm). Not to mention, that nothing was 100% on Eason definitely leaving when a lot of the QBs out there were getting snapped up. This year, I could see us taking one higher 4*, or 2 slightly lower guys. I do think that we're somewhat uniquely positioned to be able to grab higher quality Walk-On QBs than most schools due to the Hope/Zell stuff in-state. I think taking zero QBs in the next class would be reckless... but only 2 this year, and potentially only 3 next year wouldn't be in my opinion. I do think that if we are only able to pull one next year, that you probably bring in another 2 PWO QBs (as we did this year), just so you have more chances to hit. At the end of the day, if a team gets to their third string QB, they're not going to do well... In the history of college football, what teams have managed to be highly successful with a third string QB other than Ohio State basically trotting out a fullback who could throw (similarities to a lesser Tim Tebow)?

This class with Fields was a unique situation. It just can't be the norm with how often QBs transfer. You have to keep signing them because you don't know how many will stay and develop.
ETA: Taking two this year has more to do with what happens when Fromm and Fields are gone.

Sure. But I do think that you can get by signing one QB a year most of the time... particularly if they are more highly rated... maybe an extra could go to a guy who projects as an ATH, who could possibly be a QB *or* another position for example...

If we got in a dire situation rather than playing a walk on, I would let Mecole Hardman or Terry Godwin play QB. UGA has to do it with Hines Ward against Auburn one time. I remember Anquin Bolden doing against us in the Sugar Bowl in 2003.

It would be nice to see what the plan is beyond Fields, however. Even if that is hinging on an upcoming blue chip QB for 19/20.

Up until the Mullen hire, was pretty sure he was going to end up heading to UF (momma's school of preference). With Mullen there though, he seems to be an awful fit there... certainly ups our chances a bit. Will be an interesting recruitment to follow.

That's exactly the sort of name I was looking for.
