To be fair, unless Carter has signed financial paperwork, I don't think Kirby can call him in the dead period.

Calls are fine from coaches to recruits, and vice versa, during the "dead period" (within reason). The concept of the dead period exists during this time of the year for midterm exams and family time, so the the NCAA implemented to be off limits for visits to/from schools during that period.

Kirby absolutely should have been the one to call

That Emerson article on Dawgnation definitely made UGA and especially Smart look pretty bad and the fact that Smart wasn't the one to break it to him leaves a bad taste in my mouth. That's very Butch Jones-esque of Kirby and I imagine will be used heavily against our committed guys in the future

I agree with that. I mean, I get the delegation thing. However, this type of thing should come from the Head man in charge.

If this all happened as reported the thing to do would've been to pick up the phone, call him and his parents and do everything you could to find him another option. The numbers are what they are but there is a right and wrong way to handle this.

I've defended Smart as much is anyone over the last year this doesn't seem like it was handled very well. I hope it doesn't bite us in the arse with future recruiting in Texas or elsewhere.

I hope the staff is smart enough to see if this requires some damage control. If I was Smart I would call that family today and apologize for the way this all was handled.

Too much is being made about the minor details. The anger from the Cartees is justifiable. Right now, it focuses on no call from Kirby.

If Kirby called, that anger would still be there (justifiably) but it would have focused on the timing for an early enrollee.

If the timing as an early enrollee was not the issue (if he was coming in May), the anger would have focused on talking hm out of a visit before the dead period.

They are all just minor details. But the scab is fresh. The pain for the carters is fresh, and it was going to focus on something.

Move along.

So the guy he's the closest with who's been recruiting him. I don't see the problem here with Kirby not calling. It's not like they had the technical support guy make the call.

I just think Kirby likely was the one who made the decision, so he should explain it.

Why is everyone getting but hurt if Kirby called or not. Carter was not told that he didn't have scholarship just could no EE. He could have still came in June.

Sentell reported that the offer was pulled. Can't say whether it's 100% true, but there are definitely different stories out there.

He's a top 10 player in the nation at his position, not exactly hard for him to find another landing spot.

Kirby should've had some type of interaction with Carter or his family, I guess his thinking was that Dell probably had more communication and a better relationship with Carter than Kirby did. Not a great look, but big boy recruiting isn't always pretty.

If you make millions of $ representing UGA, you need to represent UGA.

Because plans were made by the Carters. There is a lot going on to get a kid into school in January, and if we change the details (Going from EE to May/June enrollee) then the recruit should have the option to change his plans....ie where he is going to school.

Don't misunderstand....the coaching staff just got caught off guard by Michel, Chubb, Carter and bellamy all coming back. If only one had not decided to come back this would not be an issue. What makes it worse, is we are holding an EE spot for a kid that has not committed, so it makes the carters feel like they are a low priority.

This kind of makes me feel like Gibbs might be a silent commit, or has told the coaching staff he is all in. If we don't get Gibbs this will turn into a horrible, horrible situation.

I just love our first world problems now, this thread is great. We are actually fighting right now about how we should have broken up with a 4* recruit. What is the nice way to tell a kid "I am sorry, son, I just dont know if you will ever play here. You really should take another look at your fallback.... the friggin University of Texas".
