Which direction from Palestine? Trying to figure out if you grew up in my crappy little East Texas town or a different little East Texas Town.

There was a guy in my freshman orientation group who said his parents told him he could go anywhere but they would pay for A&M. I agree with that. How can an A&M grad, unless he's a two percenter, not want his kids to go there?

No kids yet, but I absolutely would. While I realize it's already not the same as when I was there, and when I was there was different than 10 years before that....A&M will always be changing. What it changes to remains to be seen, I don't like how big it's becoming and would like for them to cap enrollment.
I wouldn't put pressure on a kid and say the only place I'd help them with costs was A&M, I guess I'm not redass or whatever but my parents (both A&M grads and all of my aunts & uncles save for one went to A&M) but I was never "forced" or pushed to go, it's where I wanted to go.

I didn't go to fish camp I went to howdy camp and it was alright. I talk to 2 people from it so I assume it was effective. I did get a firm lecture about bringing a flask until I shared with the guy. First time he had quality bourbon I think because it ended up on the floor.

I haven't answered the question. So yes I would send them. I would support my child in their endeavors.
I will be more worried about my child going into the military as a grunt then to a university against my wishes. My family is one that breeds the need for service.

Ok... a little farther than 30 min. From Whitehouse. You?

Would definitely encourage my kid to go to a&m. I think the size somewhat reduces the family aspect we have, and that breaks my heart. Hopefully we come to our senses very soon.

I'm not sending my kids anywhere. They can choose which university to attend. Don't understand why you wouldn't want them to go TAMU. It's an outstanding university

If kids wanted to goto A&M I'd pay for it.

Oh ok. Didn't know y'all considered Fairfield as east tx, but I haven't spent much time there.
At least you were closer than I was!

So, I've thought about it some more, and my answer actually changed a little bit....
...to HELL yes! Y'all crazy? Of COURSE I want 'em to be Aggies if I'm blessed with 'em

Of course.
The size of the University is too large, but the school still holds true to it's military heritage.
The world could use some more people to emulate the Aggie Code of Honor. It's a high bar that's set, and sometimes you may fall short, but the perfect pursuit of it's perfection yields huge rewards.

My daughter is a soph. at A&M now. Agree that the academics are nothing special, but the environment better prepares a college kid for the real world. The lack of "safe spaces" and coddling, the leadership opportunities and values - and hopefully the network that will help her land a job make it a better place than other options.
It is expensive as hell for a state school, and honestly Arkansas was much nicer to her when she was coming out of high school. Glad she's at A&M, but wouldn't have had a problem with her going to Arkansas.

I definitely would, but only for in-state tuition. Coming from a STEM point of view, unless you're Stanford/MIT/Carnegie Melon material, you're going to a large in-state tier 1 school, and A&M fits that bill just fine. A&M is entirely too large, but not yet to the point where I feel like my degree is diluted all that much. Nobody gives a shite about where I went to school anyway, and I graduated only 4 years ago. I cannot stress how little I feel it matters where you go to school as long as it isn't a complete dumpster fire (I'm talking for-profit schools here) and you learn how to work your arse off.

I agree, and I'll add that the Aggie Network is the single greatest advantage of graduating TAMU. Period. And that network is only going to balloon with the school's rapid growth. Even if/when that growth slows or is capped, the effects of this groundswell the past couple decades will be felt for generations.

Maybe. I think the Aggie Network's worth varies wildly from major-to-major. It could be just me being out-of-state and not needing to stress it as much. I know for a fact if I had to go back to Texas I would look to the Aggie Network first, however.

Yeah, it makes sense that the network would be stronger the closer you are to the epicenter, I guess. The internet helps its reach, of course.
Aggie Network pulled me back in like a tractor beam when I was out of state, thankfully
