We already know the seniors (Hurd, Jenkins, Askew) won't be back.

In my opinion:

Rush End: Myles Garrett or Daeshon Hall should start. Need to move Obioha back to his natural position at SDE.

Strongside End: Stansbury needs to be on the bench. Julien Obioha needs to take his job here back.

Nose Guard: I have no problem with Golden starting once he gets bigger.

Defensive Tackle: Looking to see how Justin Manning progresses through his redshirt. Williams needs to be 2nd team.

Weakside Linebacker: I think A.J. Hilliard is the starter next season with Brett Wade backing him up.

Middle Linebacker: Claiborne has been our most solid performer at linebacker. Hopefully Chevis' instincts are as solid as his weight.

Strongside Linebacker: Still for the life of me can't understand how Shaan Washington isn't starting right now.

Cornerback: Need to move Devante Harris to the bench until/unless he improves drastically. He's a Big 12 corner playing on an SEC team. At least one of the current freshman and one of the new freshman should start.

Safety: Need to keep Everett at FS as he is will be the most experienced defender in the backfield. Need Kameron Miles to push Howard Matthews out of his starting role.

My 2014 2-deep on defense:

Rush End: Hall/Garrett
Strongside End: Obioha/Arnold
Defensive Tackle: Manning/Walker
Nose Guard: Golden/Washington
WILL: Hilliard/Ward
MIKE: Claiborne/Chevis
SAM: Washington/Mastrogiovanni
CB: Sumner-Gardner/Garner
CB: Ellis/Davis
FS: Everett/Wiggins
SS: Miles/Watts

I don't even know where to begin on evaluating this d. They are so bad in so many areas I worry about these young kids starting to accept this shitty play. Are we seeing any progress half way through the season? I'm not sure.

Sezer seemed to have respectable games during the suspensions

Plug and play. No one is safe. We can't get a whole lot worse

I cannot wait for kam miles at safety and Jonathan Wiggins should be much improved with a year under his belt. Move Everett back to corner with Jacobs gone

I don't know what to make of Everett. He's either brilliant (Bama pick/Arky pick-6), or he completely shits the bed. He's very inconsistent.

Sadly he is one of the more reliable in my eyes, another being
claiborne, even though mental lapses seem to be common. At least with Everett they're not every play, and he is one of the more sure tacklers on the team.

Tony Hurd will be missed IMO, he had a good game on special teams this weekend

Yep, that's pretty sad. Shows just how bad our defense sucks.

Maybe, but still not good enough. That's what I was noticing about Alabama a few years ago in one of their BCSNCG's. There were absolutely NO yards after contact. When a defender touched their QB, WR, or RB, they were stopped. Period. Those are basic fundamentals. If a coach can't even get those right, then "schemes" are worthless.

I give him a pass because he's a Freshman. He definitely has all the tools to be good though. Outside of Obioha, I don't think that ANYONE'S starting job should be safe.

agree completely

A glaring difference between our defense, and mediocre defenses is that when a there is an opportunity for a tackle, the initial defender at least slows the ball carrier so that help can come. We just get shrugged of especially on tackles on the edge. That would be step 1 to less YAC. After we figure that out then we can worry about becoming a defensive force like LSU or Florida in years past (Florida's speed on the outside in 2012 comes to mind)

you're absolutely right, schemes are nothing if you can't execute fundamentals

Golden has the starting NT job until someone steps up and takes it from him.

Can someone enlighten me why Hurd is only a nickelback? I know he's short but he has to be better than Matthews

Simple. Hurd is a cornerback. He's 5'9 190. That's not large enough to play strong safety. Say what you will about Matthews, but he's 210.

It seemed like Matthews was able to have his first decent game because he was able to play up in the box the whole time. Could he potentially become, rather than a safety, a coverage linebacker? He looked like he was getting into the backfield and had a few good tackles that were either for a loss or a short gain (and the FF).

That would actually solve two problems at once if Matthews was the starting SAM and Miles the starting BS next season.
