The Hammster's update

Quick Friday VIP Notes 5.4
TAYLOR HAMM·FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2018

Jimbo Fisher and his staff continue to grind the recruiting trail during the spring evaluation period. It’s paying off in the form of campus visits and commitments and there’s no sign of that slowing down anytime soon.

In fact, A&M’s recruiting efforts are only going to get stronger as former LSU General Manager, Austin Thomas, is close to being officially added to the staff. As Texas A&M’s chief compliance officer, Brad Barnes, Tweeted a couple of weeks ago, the hold up on an announcement was due to an NCAA waiver. Barnes’ tweet that read, “Another waiver approved by the #NCAA. #SweetSassyMolassy,” was in reference to the waiver being cleared which was the big hurdle that needed to be cleared in order for Thomas to officially join the staff. Now it’s about going through the official hiring process and the HR department.

Thomas, who was named two-time director of player personnel of the year, is going immediately help the Aggies’ recruiting staff become more organized and efficient. That’s scary considering how well Fisher’s staff is recruiting already, including the increase in early evaluations and offers.

We’ll get more in-depth when it’s necessary but this is very exciting news for Texas A&M’s recruiting efforts moving forward.

Just to recap a few notes from the week, Houston Madison CB Bobby Wolfe has announced he will make a commitment at The Opening Finals late this summer. His new top five includes four out-of-state programs - Arkansas, LSU, Georgia and Florida- but we don’t expect him to leave the state of Texas. In fact, we’re fully expecting him to re-join the Aggies’ top 3 class when he goes public.

A popular question on the site revolves around quarterback recruiting. Coach Dickey has already seen Grant Gunnell, KJ Jefferson, Graham Mertz, Sky Forest, Jackson Walker and Austin Kirksey.

I’m told, per multiple sources, that A&M has been really impressed with Gunnell and Mertz. They also really like North Panola 3-star QB KJ Jefferson. Dickey will see Jacob Zeno throw on Monday and then head out west to see Cajon (CA) four-star QB KJ Daniels.

Wisconsin QB commit Graham Mertz has high interest in A&M despite his pledge to the Badgers. He is expected to visit College Station this summer.

We’ve been over the situation with Grant Gunnell and he’s still a guy A&M would take in a heartbeat but that’s not going to keep them from evaluating and recruiting other prospects. It really looks like an A&M/Oklahoma State battle at the moment.

As for other potential additions to the 2019 class, here are a list of guys I’m currently confident in A&M landing.

-Kenyon Green
-Jalen Wydermyer
-Bobby Wolfe
-Erick Young
-Zach Edwards
-Javonne Shepherd
-David Ugwoegbu
-Isaiah Spiller
-Andrew Coker
-Marcus Stripling
-Jalen Curry
-Blake Trainor

Landing those 11 prospects would put A&M at 23 commitments but there are a number of early enrollees like Kam Brown, RJ Orebo and Kaden Davis, so that would allow room for plenty of big-time additions.

He said later in the comments that he left of Jeffery Carter by mistake.

Wolfe, Young, and Carter along with Green, and Shepherd on the OL. That would be a HUGE jolt of talent in some much needed areas!

The Tigers are always behind the curve.

But the Whore’ns know they are fricked:

quote:

Say what we want about Jimbo but he hired a true position coach that can recruit for each hire. We need and can afford a real WR coach who can both coach and recruit, ala Herb Hand replacing Warehime. Meekins to TE's is one thing but at a certain point Tom just needs to sack up and trim the fat even if he's friends with them.

quote:

Tom Herman is yet another dumbfrick who has shown up on a bigger stage with the mistaken belief that what got him there will continue to elevate him going forward. So he brought his bros in and lived within the bubble that a pre-Del Conte regime was all to willing to accommodate. They were utterly fricking shocked when Maryland publicly humiliated them. He was perplexed with the Horny blowback. He was surprised when players didn’t just bask in the glow of his brilliance with runny eggs and constant hazing about water consumption and just generally mistrusting them all as bitchy idiots. Maybe he’s learned some things, but narcissists usually don’t. I look at what he did with his staff this offseason and see nothing but blind arrogance that will probably cost him his job or at least put some scars on his regime. He’s done all of this because he knows better. Warehime is loyal and Mehringer is a protege. You and I may be too stupid to understand why that’s all Herman needs while his mind handles the rest and, well, that’s our problem.

quote:

The lethargy (read: arrogance) that Herman has approached staff deficiencies with is certainly disturbing and makes me think that his narcissism/stubbornness are going to cause him to be way too slow to fix mistakes. Beck hire sucked when it was made, it still sucks one year after, and it's going to suck two years after, as well. We'll likely win 2-3 less games this year than we otherwise could with an above average OC. Herman can't afford that kind of setback, yet he's walking right into it with confidence.

quote:

Herman hasn’t won me over yet. This year makes or breaks him at Texas. It’s funny talking to other Texas fans. Most have drank the kool-aid as most fans do with a new coach. They want their team to win. They want this hire to be the right guy. I do too. I just haven’t seen the results and have seen some questionable decisions. The most important metric is winning and 7-5 isn’t good enough. Everyone knows it’s a rebuilding year and but but Saban first year data point thrown out there, but if you saw the games, 7-5 was below the easily attainable 8 or 9 win season.

quote:

Beck was a terrible hire when it happened, and he's still a bad OC. He's likely going to get let go at hte end of the year, so why leave a bad coach in place? I don't usually advocate for change, but when the coach has been poor everywhere he's gone and he was poor for your team last year, what evidence do you have to expect a better result this year?

quote:

The reality is we missed out on a lot of our top targets and were able to salvage a good class late. A guy like Ojomo won't pop up with two months to go every year. Carson and Williams are projects. We don't get Ossai if there's no coaching change, and we were fortunate Coburn went to Westfield. We scraped together a DL class but that kind of thing isn't sustainable. We've missed out on our top target already this year. Stripling is likely not coming here. I expect us to get Nana, but it's hard to say the reason we get him is because of Giles. A better recruiting effort probably means Nana is already a sure thing. Mowry is already committed to aggy. That's the top 4 DL in the state. 3 are close to guarantees not to come here and the fourth is still up in the air. Now, I see us offering OOS 3 stars. This is not the optimal way to handle DL recruiting every year. Herman needs to recognize this and address it. So far, he has not.

EJ has already put a flip pick in. What's he going to say when he doesn't? silent? just waiting to announce on his own time?

The sips have a horrible class right now, they are desperate to gain any kind of momentum. I’m sure that dozens of hundred dollar hand shakes are occurring today in Austin

Anyone here want to admit they were one of the one’s clamoring for Tom, saying he was the next Urban Meyer and we were putting ourselves decades behind by not pulling him in?

they have a class that is far from horrible, but yes they desperately needed something like this to happen and will push the flip narrative really hard for the immediate future

It’s now that I reemphasize that I told all of you that he was a loser and would be a bust. That he was immature and had all kinds of character issues

I’ll admit I thought we would regret not hiring him. In hindsight I missed the arrogance to go along with the genius and I think jimbo is a much better hire and fit here.

I don't believe I clamored for him, but I'll have to check the tape

The way he left Houston was certainly a giant red flag.
