I don't think Venabkes has ever been interested in becoming a HC.

That, and I believe he was one of the OU assistants that used race to recruit against us.

Still a lot of season left. So plenty of time for Sumlin to either frick up or win back some favor.

I've been on the fire sumlin bandwagon since we lost to bama 59-0, but if he were to win 9 games on the season (including bowl win) With this team, depending on what the loses looked like, I would say he actually earned another year. Especially if you could see the team progressing.

All that said, I just don't see it. Likely finish 6-6 or 7-5 with sumlin fired. I just can't see how this offense will beat a couple of defenses it will have to.

i've been down on rumlin too, but if he pulls off 9 wins then i'd be happy to have him back.

that's 9 wins w/o a bowl game btw. it actually seems realistic. lose to bama and auburn, beat everyone else. i wouldn't put money on it, but it could happen.

8-4 with an LSU win. If he can do that, give him 1 more.

He is setting the program up for real chances the next few years.

We’ve been hearing this for years. 2016 was supposed to be the year when we played a bunch of young kids in 15. Now it’s 2018 or 19. Too many damn excuses have been made for this coach. Most coaches not named nick saban or urban Meyer will have an off year (Dabo swinney went 6-7 in 2010, his third year with Clemson) but sumlin has been in “rebuilding mode” with this program far too long. It’s time for him to put up or shut up.

Is him succeeding the best thing for this program? Absolutely. Hard to have a top tier program without stability. But you don’t keep hoping he will turn the corner just to give him another chance when he fails.

Unfortunately if he does goes 8-4 there is a very realistic chance he’s still here. 9-3 should be the minimum this year but it probably won’t be. I agree that there aren’t many big names available right now but in today’s landscape it’s pretty damn hard to pull away a top tier coach anyways, a lot more schools are willing to pony up.

We absolutely don’t want to pull a LSU, our AD needs to be looking at potential replacements now. You don’t want to fire the guy and get caught with your dic* in your hand and no plan of action to move forward. That’s what LSU did and look at what it got them.

In the end, I just don’t think sumlin is the guy. He’s proven he can’t manage a roster effectively, makes the same gametime mistakes mistakes (ineffective clock management), and doesn’t instill a killer mentality in his teams. If he stays another 4-5 years he will most likely continue to flounder between 7-9 wins, with maybe a double digit season mixed in because all the stars aligned and the SEC has another down year like this one. Doubt he will ever have us in the SEC championship game.

He is always to blame when we do poorly. But when he's playing in 2018 or 2019 during 2017, I'd rather us not make an emotional decision and frick our program up for another decade. Look at what LSU is dealing with right now. I don't want to be that. I don't want another Fran. I don't want another Sherman. You will not convince me Sumlin isn't better than either of our previous two coaches.

If he goes 8-4 with an LSU win, give him 1-2 more. With the state of our team right now, that is a huge accomplishment. Let the work he's putting in right now pay off. If he still can't win the West, even with Sabans dominance, he should go.

It was always 10 wins this year for Sumlin to keep his job. I imagine 9 might do it. 8 wins and he gone. They have been looking since UCLA and the "letter" debacle.

So Sumlin isn't staying no matter how much the Aggies at TexAgs want him to keep his job. Even Liucci will admit it if pressed enough

Seasons with 1 home loss of fewer:

Franchione - 1
Sherman - 1
Sumlin - 0

Winning records in conference:

Franchione - 2
Sherman - 1
Sumlin - 1

Home losses

Franchione - 9
Sherman - 11
Sumlin - 11

Massive blown leads (21+ second half, 14+ 4th quarter)

Franchione - 0
Sherman - 1
Sumlin - 2

Starting and Backup QBs transferring 1 week apart:

Franchione - No
Sherman - No
Sumlin - 2015

Answer this question: Has Kevin Sumlin's job performance thus far merited an EXTENSION beyond the 2019 season? If the answer is no, you fire him this year.

Exactly. Hate the argument that "well he coached up a talentless team". He's been here for 6 years so that's his fault. Roster is much worse than when he showed up.

He recruited this team. Every single one of them. If we are that devoid of talent where 8-4 is considered a success I think we've answered the question

When was the last time there was 3 or 4 other teams as bad as OM, Ark, LSU and State are this year in the west? If they lose to anyone other than Bama and aren't at least competitive against Fl and Auburn he needs to be gone.

Right now we're still better than OM and LSU, probably equal to MSU and Florida and Bama/Auburn are out of our league.

Auburn obviously isn't Bama and an upset there wouldn't be shocking. The problem is, what are the odds we beat everyone we can realistically beat? If we had done that last year we would have finished 11-1 and wouldn't be having this conversation.

Think about how bad the LSU teams we've lost to since 2014 were? That MSU or OM team last year?

If Sumlin goes 9-3 he will have at least beaten the teams he should beat.

The only real difference this year is that we are very healthy at the midway point (Wilson being the only player I believe we miss, Starkel/Mond is a wash) and we have the expectation of improving because we're playing so many freshman who are managing to stay healthy.

I can see a scenario where we are the 4th best team in the SEC by season's end. If that happens, no way he gets fired. The "wait till next year" wagon will be in full circle.

On paper next year looks promising. We return essentially the entire offense apart from Ford and maybe Kirk, including every significant OL contributed. Every LB and CB on the roster returns except for Willis and Wilson will likely get a medical redshirt. If Keke stays and Durham keeps it up, we'll have 8 defensive starters back along with 10 or 11 on offense. Roughly 17 of the 22 2-deep could be back.

The problem is that I've seen this movie and think Sumlin will waste it. I see a great opportunity for a new coach to get off to a running start, not another promising year ruined by a staff hanging around too long.

I don't see how Kirk stays. He's a potential top 10 pick.

A slot/KR won't go in the top 10 IMO. He's a fringe top-20 pick.

Let's run the numbers. Wide Receivers Kirk's height (5'11) or shorter taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft over the last 5 drafts: (slot receivers in bold)

2013. Tavon Austin (8th Overall)
2014. Odell Beckham Jr. (11th Overall)
2014. Brandin Cooks (20th Overall)
2015. Phillip Dorsett (29th Overall)
2016. Corey Coleman (15th Overall)
2017. John Ross (9th Overall)

Here's the bottom line. If Christian Kirk runs a sub-4.4 at the combine, he's a top 10 pick.
