Baylor Cupp & Andre White were both 3 stars that got big bumps around this time last year.

One of the funniest things about last class was the fact that people complained about Cupp when he committed, being only a three star and all.

Landing Ngata would go a long way in taking some of the sting out of missing out on the two 5* from Tx, dude has great hands and would be perfect in Jimbo's offense.

Actually most were happy when Cupp committed. The comments were not to question the commitment, but to question why someone with such an impressive offer list had only 3 stars. I don't recall anyone saying he was a bad take.

Roger's comment in Cupp was:
quote:

Cupp's junior film is awesome, he is just straight clowning people. He commits a couple felonies while blocking

Yeah I thought everyone bought the hype regarding him, which ultimately proved correct

I’m not going to go look, but I remember posts on this very board bemoaning that we were forced to take a 3 star after missing on that TE that went to OU.

Would like to get King - he's the key to the class IMO

He looks like a great prospect. High-level athlete, big arm, and fairly polished compared to most dual threats at this point.

He would definitely have talent to throw to. Hopefully we can get the OL where it needs to be.

I would venture to say Cupp is a better TE than A&M has ever had. Certainly a better blocker than Sternberger.

Jimbo did surprisingly well with the transition from spread offense talent to west coast offense style in 2018. A lot of that production was carried out by Williams & Sternberger. We will see if Corbin & Cupp can take up the slack.

Without Jim Turner @ OL coach it's sketchy what that will happen. Josh Henson is a good OL coach in a spread system but not great. Combo blocking, an essential in west coast offenses, takes time to develop. We will see what he can do. He's got Kenyon Green to work with. Among other studs. If he steps on his pecker he needs to be deleted.

Not sure why Turner bolted to the NFL but I was disappointed when he did. Good Man and a good OL Coach.

Everybody loved Turner. But he seemed to recruit 3 or 4 guard types and 1 tackle per class. He took commitments from 3 guards and 1 tackle over a year early for the 2020 class. I just didn't get it.

Apparently the Bengals liked him more than I did. I thought Turner was just ok.

I think Turner was a good coach/teacher but pretty average recruiter. Hopefully Henson is both, but I would rather what Turner was than the opposite when it comes to the OL.

Bengals head coach was a grad Assistant at A&M and married Sherman's daughter. Sherman and Turner are cousins. Its a family thing that drew Turner to the Bengals.

We loved Turner because we saw our OL that was pumping out NFL talent early this decade decline big time under Dave Christensen to the point where it basically destroyed an amazing QB pipeline we had lined up. We ran back to Turner hoping for the old results while kinda no knowing how much of it was him and how much of it was Sherman (a great OL coach himself). We decided to give Turner all the credit because we could still have him.

Another factor is the fact that OL coaching is what sunk Jimbo's last team at FSU before he left, and is part of the reason they still sucked badly last season too. We don't know if it was because FSU was too cheap to get the guy Jimbo wanted or if Jimbo just picked a bad pick (probably both), but one of the best parts early on about the Jimbo marriage is we had what we felt was an elite OL coach just waiting for him.

At this point though the narrative doesn't matter. The entire team has to take a step forward this season without an obvious way (from our perspective) for that to happen for this whole Jimbo thing to work out.

BJ Anderson fricked up the OL more than Christensen, but I'm glad neither is here anymore

Huh? Well, I know one way that the team can take a considerable step forward, and that is through a better pass defense. I thought it was our biggest flaw last year.

I am not saying it is "obvious" that they will be better there, but it is not impossible. Blades might be the answer at one CB spot. Maybe O'Neal claims one safety position. We'll see.

Isn't it a bit early (only June) to be concluding that this team can't improve in any way from last year?
