After rewatching the vandy game there were some positives

Defense looked good, it’s vandy so I won’t get my hopes too high but they looked solid and considering how much vandy had the ball it could’ve been bad. Our big name guys made plays.

Offensively, we do look faster. Ainias is such a weapon and spiller looked good! Again, it’s vandy so don’t want the hopes too high. Not trying to sugar coat anything cause there are still a lot of question marks for me but I saw a few good things that leave some hope

Stephen McGee crapped on Mond's play in the TexAgs Film Room segment today LINK and Spencer Neely was on TexAgs Radio (Hour 3) calling for him to be straight up benched due to poor play and poor leadership. LINK

If TA is willing to start trashing the staring QB like that it's possible his days really are numbered if his poor play keeps up. They don't usually let anyone go at players like that so I think it's interesting to note that two former players went at him like that today.

It doesn't matter though. Fisher is stubborn and thinks he can fix Mond.

I think it does matter. Again, if they are willing to let that kind criticism go out it's very possible they are hearing things behind the scenes that indicate Jimbo isn't as wed to Mond as have thought.

I don't think Jimbo has ever given the impression he's deeply committed to Mond (or at least anymore than is required out of a head coach speaking publicly of his starting QB).

He's just failed to recruit a better QB capable of beating out Mond. And the team is nowhere near bad enough to be rebuilding so he doesn't really have a good reason to go with the younger unproven guys up to this point.

But I do think it is noteworthy, as you said, that Texags is a part of such commentary. Maybe they do know something. Or maybe they, as an organization that's deeply committed to A&M, are butthurt about Mond's views on Sully and aren't holding back like they normally would.

Fingers crossed that he gets better. He has looked ok in the past. Just don't expect the struggle in year 4. Mond is not a pro caliber QB so this is the end of the line for him. I can't imagine as was mentioned earlier that he would get a Covid fifth year. That would be immensely unfair to those signed after him.

Yeah that is tough, as QB is the one position that only 1 guy gets to play. But if he was killing it and decided to play a 5th year, I don't think anyone here would be complaining about fairness.

Here's a summary of each time a starting QB has been benched in favor of his backup since Corey Pullig's Senior Year:

1997: Branndon Stewart benched mid-season for Randy McCown. Team rallies to finish the regular season 9-2.

1998: Randy McCown injured scoring a touchdown against t.u. Branndon Stewart takes over during the Big 12 Championship.

2002: Mark Farris never recovered from the knee injury he sustained in the Spring. Benched in game 2 for Dustin Long. Long benched during the OU game and Reggie McNeal came in and won. McNeal hurt the next game and Long came back in. Long benched for Farris in the season finale. Slocum fired.

2003: Dustin Long and Reggie McNeal replaced each other multiple times that season. In the last game, it even happened between plays. (WTF)

2005: Reggie McNeal injured against Oklahoma. Stephen McGee comes in.

2008: Stephen McGee injured in season opener. Jerrod Johnson comes in. Ryan Tannehill moved to WR.

2010: Jerrod Johnson benched in the 7th game. Ryan Tannehill comes in and wins the final 6 games of the regular season.

2013: Johnny Manziel suspended for the first half of the season opener. Matt Joeckel has the team up 28-21 at halftime.

2014: Kenny Hill gets shitfaced before the Alabama game. Kyle Allen starts the remainder of the season.

2015: Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray spend the season getting fricked over by Sumlin. Both transfer. Jake Hubenak starts and loses the bowl game.

2016: Trevor Knight injured against Mississippi State. Jake Hubenak comes in and starts the next two games (1-1). Knight comes back against LSU.

2017: Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond rotate series against UCLA until Starkel gets hurt. Mond benched during Nicholls game for Hubenak, then starts the next 6 games. Mond benched against Mississippi State. Starkel starts the last 5 games. Sumlin fired

Agree fair is a poor choice of words. Having recruited QBs quit and go to other schools has set this program back. I’m a four years and out proponent.

Jerrod wasn't the same that year after that shoulder injury. Didn't he have surgery in off season? Was bummed for him he never seemed to quite get back in form from previous year, Tannehill's talent aside.

That's is notable for sure. I'm kinda surprised considering how Fisher has publicly talked about him and how Billy talked about him leading up to the season. Definitely notable.

Not really the point of my post but I get what you’re saying. I was really and still am hoping Mond has a really good season but at what point do you say let’s give another guy a shot?
I think they let Mond go through the Florida game but if there’s no improvement by State we have to move on.

We've dumped on him a bunch. Seems like some folks had to get stuff off their chests. But I'm going to let off until after Bama though that may not be a good gauge.

I’m giving him till after the Florida game, I think it’s unrealistic to see calzada or King for either of those games. But if it’s more of the same from Kellen then I want Calzada for State

If we lose the next 2 games, we'd need Bama to lose at least 2 (and more likely 3) games to have a shot at the SECW. And also to win 7 straight to close out the season. Plus we'd be behind Florida for a 2nd major bowl spot.

I don't know if you immediately give one of the other guys the starting spot but basically the season is over at that point, and to me it would be crazy to give one guy every meaningful snap for 3 years without accomplishing anything meaningful.

All good points and they were obvious during the FIU game. Sherman held him in so he could get the career total yardage record, then pulled him for Tannehill.

I get what you’re saying, but if we split the Florida/Bama games we’re gonna be having a whole different conversation. I wouldn’t say the season is completely over after those two games (if we lose them) but if we win out that’s HUGE for recruiting and momentum into next season.

I agree, whatever happens in Tuscaloosa, if we beat Florida at Kyle, the season is still on track.

And yes, winning 7 in a row to close out the regular season would be a great rebound and gets us close to some of the goals we had when looking at this season 6-12 months ago. But I'm guessing you'd have to go back 3 decades to find the last time we've done that, and the closest approximation to such a turnaround (2010) involved a mid-season QB change, as mentioned in this thread.

Hopefully after Saturday we’ll have a better idea of what we’ll look like the rest of the season. I’m not asking for a win (although that would be awesome!) but a close game going into the 4th is what I want to see.
