is Jimbo even a potential possibility? i just assumed the rumors were on behalf of an agent making a play for more money or something.

i still say we offer chris petersen double what nick saban makes and try to snatch him. maybe not quite double, but make an offer to be the highest paid coach and make him turn it down.

He just played that game with LSU a year or two ago and got the bump in salary and has a stupid big buyout (if he's fired, not if he leaves on his own). PLus he's having a shite year. This isn't the year to try and get more money even if he didn't just do it.

that makes sense.

whoever is hired, and as another poster has mentioned before, i hope the AD/BMA open the wallet and let him cherry pick the top assistants in the country. in for a penny...

Early signing is Dec 20-22. Jimbo is going to be coaching until Dec 2 b/c Florida St rescheduled their ULM game so they wouldn't miss a bowl. Is it that much to ask to interview other coaches who aren't going to be in conference title games? Maybe also get one or two interviews in right after the championship games on Dec 2?

I just don't like the rush to go after a guy who trending downward and is looking to escape a school that traditionally owns the conference it's in when he has a $40 million buyout in his back pocket. It feels like he might be trying to get out before things completely collapse around him.

For the money he will be getting paid I think it's nuts to not talk to anyone else. He's no sure thing and he'll be coaching a week longer than 95% of all FBS choaches so what's the harm in getting some guys to interview?

Saban is making $11.25 million. LINK to all FBS HC salaries

May as well offer him if you are willing to go that high.

DAMN! saban is worth it, but i had no idea salaries had climbed that high. i thought harbaugh was being paid the most at around 8 or 9. so yeah, i'll retract my statement of doubling saban's contract (thought he was making 7 something).

ETA: looking at that top ten highest paid coaches list has to depress the frick out of a&m and michigan fans for ROI. sorry tbird.
also, lol @ texas being listed in the AAC.

This is the exact reason I don't think we should jump into bed with a coach that is at minimum getting $7 million and likely more per year from us without talking to several other coaches first. People lost their minds over Sumlin's contract and that's going to be nothing compared to what it will take to steal Jimbo.

Even if the buyout payments could/would be more amenable with Jimbo he is still going to be making so much that it's going to be nearly impossible to fire him if he ends up being the same or worse than Sumlin. He's going to want something as good or better than the $40 million buyout he already has at FSU to get him.

Dr RC - we've already talked to quite a few coach's agents, and narrowed it down. I'd say chances are pretty damned good that he's going to be our next coach. And we are going to pay him a ton of money

But it isn't my money, and we have tons of it anyway, so all aboard! At the very least, our recruiting will improve significantly, and he cannot really do any worse than Sumlin.

is he known as an elite recruiter, or is he an elite recruiter because he's at fsu? i'll admit i honestly don't know much about jimbo. if he's a real possibility i might have to start doing my homework. the only fsu game i can remember watching is the National Championship against the barn.

Talking to an agent is not the same thing as getting a coach in the room to hear what he wants to do with the program. I don't care what an agent has to say. They get paid to tell you what you want to hear for a living.

Woodward was at LSU when Saban (and Jimbo) were there. Apparently, there is some sort of professional friendship there still from those days. I think it's fair to say that Woodward is aware of what Jimbo's philosophy and vision would be without doing a traditional interview.

I still want him to hear from more than one coach. Tunnel vision leads to failure more often than not.

What's happening here is what I am going to call the "I-35 Shuffle." See, everyone is looking east to Jimbo, no wait look west to Petersen, when our AD is shuffling right on up 35 to get Chaz Morris.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

You make very good points. That said, I think we’ve hired a lot of good-but-not-great coaches who didn’t get the job done. (Fran is actually an exception in my eyes because he was just about the hottest thing in th Country at the time - oh well.) Sips just paid an outrageous sum for a prick that will look good winning and terrible losing. I say that if we can get Jimbo, and we can reset and have a healthy-ish experience with a coach on the high level - well, we’ve got everything else in place: we’ve got the facilities and cash flow that demonstrate commitment and I really do trust that Fisher would elevate our program - to what level I don’t know - but coaching and perception wise - he’d do that for us. I hope we make a serious run and land either Fisher or Patterson.

I'd rather have Peterson out of TCU than Fisher if I had a choice.

Peterson can flat out coach. He's I think one of the best in the country. You put him in the SEC and let him go and I think we really have something.

Fisher seems to be a great recruiter but I don't think he develops as well.
