To be fair, Eddy wasn't sure she belonged there either. The issue most of us had with our Bugle Rank is that we were under the mistaken impression that the 12 members of the bugle rank would be the 12 top marchers not already drum majors...and the fact that they were already chosen by the directors BEFORE the auditions took place.
Also you know as well as I do that, had he not dropped his mace during the tryouts, Josh would have been head drum major and Mark would have been I-Band.
I knew deep down I wouldn't be one of the last three...I was lucky enough to make the final 8.
The Band's bugle rank tryouts sound like our Guidon tryouts. Lots of politics involved, in addition to the "whoever can run the best" requirement.
I got stuck with being the guidon brother, even though I sucked at running because during our tryouts, the only other guy who was a great runner got mono. Lo and behold, I had to be the guidon bearer for 6 weeks after our real one got suspended for hazing. Worst 4 weeks of my life until I fricking dropped the guidon one morning when going to parade rest before formation (fish were not present yet).
The smokings after that were truly breathtaking. After about a week of them, I just stood up and told the junior who had been the previous guidon bearer "I don't want to do this anymore". He looked at me like I'd just told him I fricked his mom. I think the guy who got mono carried it after that. The regular guidon bearer who had gotten suspended absolutely hated me for years afterwards. He apologized about a year after we graduated and had some time away from the Corps to become sane again.

Your dad... ask your dad.

One day while practicing he popped that thing down and ripped a nice slice in my back, ruined my shirt. He was of course mortified. I couldn't really do anything to him because my brethren seniors, including the super-sensitive SafetySam, were all laughing their asses off.

There's not necessarily a "who can run the best" or a "who can march the best" requirement.
File 1 is always the Band Commander
The Band XO is placed according to height
Very rarely do unit commanders not make bugle rank...same with the combined band staff
That leaves about 4 at most who aren't wearing 1 diamond or higher
Frankly, I was SHOCKED that Mark Macicek (Deputy Corps Commander from our class) wasn't on bugle rank.

The woooooooing during bugle rank's flourish makes my blood boil. To me it comes across as a mocking insult to cadets who spend hours upon hours putting the drills together
Iirc, it started with CTs doing the "ooh" and "ahhh" bit. Didn't really notice it unless I was near the block. Now, it's the whole student section going whoooooo.

Two other things of note for next year's leadership:
3 of 4 top positions (CCommander, one of the 2 deputy Corps Commanders, and the Chief of Staff) are all D&C
3 of the 10 Major Unit Commanders are also women.

Can't say I'm surprised about the D&C part.
Actually, I can for Corps Commander. For the 4 years I was in school:
1996-1997: Steve Foster (Army)
1997-1998: Danny Feather (Army)
1998-1999: Taze Bailey (USMC)
1999-2000: Forrest Lane (lost his commission for medical reasons)
When I was in school, it was almost a disqualifier to be in a position of leadership in the Combined Band if you were a contract cadet.
Band Commander - D&C (although he enlisted Navy)
Band XO - D&C (medically disqualified for Army)
All 3 Drum Majors - D&C
A Company CDR - AgBQ00 will have to answer this, as I forgot who y'all's commander was our zip year
A Battery CDR - D&C
B Company CDR - D&C
B Battery CDR - D&C
Bugle Rank - 1 AF, 1 Army (out of the 10 I remember who were on BR - forgot the other 2)

Sean Penrod. As far as I know he is still flying raptors for Uncle Sam.
And remember the Band Commander didn't just enlist in the navy. He became the all American of the All Americans LOL

That's a surprise, unless the selection procedure changed. Back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth the Corps Commander was appointed by the Trigon. I can't imagine them picking a D&C guy?

This thread has gone full fake army.
Sorry, I know Maximus is reading this just wishing he could say something about the fake army and nazis. Trying to help out.
Y'all band nerds do need to tone that shite down though

Dude its a corps thread. I say let them nerd out, it is fun to read because I understand so little. I get off on that corps stuff though sometimes. Back in college when I learned about the forbidden words thing I was taken to another level of understanding of the power of human will.

Younger sister still gets a laugh out of this: my fish year she visited and while in my hole looked out our window and said, "Who are those guys?" while pointing to RV's practicing.
Me: I don't know what you're talking about.
Sister: THOSE guys, right THERE.
Me: I don't see anything.
Sister: Are you nuts? They're right THERE!
Me: I can't see through windows.
Sister: You... what? Oh OK, I get it. Well if you COULD see through windows, who would those guys be?
Me: I dunno. I wouldn't be able to see them, either.

Probably not wise to insult a SEAL by implying he's merely a member of the 82d Airborne. ("All Americans")

Does anyone know the real reason why RV's can't high-port? I mean they're sergebutts for goodness sakes ... hazing doesn't really cut it with 21 year olds

Next up, female yell leader. I'd like for that to happen just to watch the madness that would ensue on every A&M fan site.
Wait, there are people aside from freshman girls who actually care about the yell leaders!?
