Surprisingly, it's a debated topic (which surprised me in college). At A&M, one of our professors swore that many southerners knew slavery was wrong and that it was just a matter of time before it was outlawed by them (south). The only reason they seceded was because they wanted to have their states abolish slavery on their own terms. Basically, "state rights".

But then another history professor said the exact opposite and that the war was definitely about slavery. Apparently, modern revisionists like to water down the horrific intentions of the south.


So, who knows . All we know is that the south did fight for slavery and it was wrong. Yet, this fact rustles a lot of southerners and PoliTards
