I dunno. They're the ones bitching.
I went there one or two times when I first moved here but haven't since. I live in northside so I can be there in 3 minutes. Honestly since we built the deck, I have no desire to go out to drink. Beers, scotch, old fashioneds, and the like taste a lot better watching a sunset on my back porch than paying overpriced bars.
BelTemp has a few options for bars now that weren't even there when I moved here 8 years ago.

I'm looking forward to not fighting 290/northbound 6 traffic on gameday to College Station when I get the chance to go to games.

Now you just have to go through Hearne or Cameron
both suck.

53/485 scared the ever living shite out of me when I went back and forth while in college.

Can't be as bad as 290 which has been under construction since humans invented roads. I'll never understand how they manage to pick gameday weekends to shut it down to one lane
The Bama game in 2013 was awful, we left at 7 AM and didn't get to CS til almost 10. They had traffic diverted to the feeder road for MILES.

It does for me still today. Especially at night. THS had 2 buses get in a wreck this year headed to a game in CS.

I remember driving back from Waco at 2 AM after the Baylor game in 2010. Highway 6 at that time of night is terrifying

Traffic ain't the problem, it's the fact that I feared for my life on that road. Just one drunk shitkicker swerving on one of those turns near Cameron and you're dead. Lots of people died in wrecks on 485/77 before they finally put in those flashing stop signs.

Good. Then you'll get used to I35 very quickly and your melting will transfer with ease. Feel right at home.

I admit I've never understood how 35 through Austin can be gridlock no matter when I go through. I've driven that stretch at 1 AM on a random weekday and it was stop and go.

Ditto. I swear that stretch of highway is never fun

Austin definitely has inadequate high volume roadways for its population, but it just seems odd that it's ALWAYS terrible.

If she wants consistent hours steer clear of journalism. My life was hell when I worked in news.
Also, congrats!

Vacation trip to S.A., I made the mistake of taking 35 from just south of Waco. Holy cow. On the return trip we took the toll road to the east of Austin - I don't remember the highway number but I'm sure Texans are familiar - and didn't see another car and (here's the fun part) didn't pay a dime as I live out of state. So clearly the answer is to leave Texas. Just sayin'

there's a big turn on 35 near downtown that creates stop and go traffic at certain times.
I bet Austin was amazing in the 60's and 70's, there are just too many people living there now.

It's mind-blowing. 80% of my business is south of Temple and I've traveled north and south through Austin at 2 AM and 6PM. It's been gridlocked or smooth sailing at any time. More gridlock.
I kept sending my boss the toll bill and he asked me to stop taking the company car in the toll. I said if you're going to make me go to SA for a day trip and then let me go just so that I'm hitting 35 in Austin at peak hours, you can kiss my butt. I'm not doing "60 miles but 3 hours from my family" again.

When I was growing up, the Austin city limit population sign read 212,000...

Amazing. So hard to imagine now.

Solid advice, thanks. I know nothing about that field. Quality of life is our #1 priority this job search. Main reason she left the USAF.

I should ad the caveat that my experience was all in TV news.
It's possible working in print or online is a better experience.
Local TV news though? My lord it sucks. You'll work long hours for very mediocre pay. You'll have to work on most holidays and often on weekends. People will give you the stink eye b/c they will associate you with the cable news media even though local news is for the most part actual news. Worst of all, since people tend to only want to see negative news stories you are constantly covering people's lives getting ruined which can really wear on you.
