The definition of insanity us doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Maybe we don't pick up a b league coach again that we think might be able to handle big boy football?

Our last two coaches before Sumlin were Fran who was in the SEC at Alabama and Sherman who was an NFL coach. Damn B league coaches that don't understand big boy football are the worst I tell ya!

I guess my two biggest factors for the new coach would be recruiting, and player development.

Sumlin has done a good job recruiting, and a terrible job at developing that talent. Can we find someone who does both? How is chad at a technical attention to detail level? Someone who catches and hammers the oline for tipping plays by their alignment, for example.

Interesting article about Morris addressing a coaching conference in East Texas. LINK

Morris seems to put a high priority on building a culture around his program. Mentions him learning to delegate as a head coach.
LINK

Morris signed an extension with SMU last year, and his contract goes through 2023. No idea what kind of buyout would be involved with him.

Doesn't Morris have a specific out clause for A&M? Isn't that why Baylor didn't sign him? (because he refused to budge on it)

According to message board rumors, the only reason Morris didn't take the Baylor job was because Baylor wouldn't put an "Aggie" clause in his contract.

If this is true, then I'm sure he demanded the same thing in his SMU contract and they probably caved in.

Some X's and O's talk about Morris' offense. This dates back to when he was offensive coordinator at Clemson. He may or may not have had to modify this approach during the rebuild at SMU.
LINK

I guess this brings up the question of what kind of defensive approach he might bring to A&M. Plenty of stuff written about his offense, but not much about his defense. But that probably has more to do with the fact that he made his name while directing Clemson's offense.

Morris is the highest paid Non-Power 5 head football coach, earning $2 million and change per year.
LINK

He is making more than some of these Power 5 head coaches out there.

Since his contract now runs through 2023, there would be a significant buyout to hire him away. But that wouldn't apply to us if, in fact, the rumored A&M clause attached to it is there.

Frost and Norvell are also raking in around $2 million per year. Probably no A&M contract clauses for them, though.

As mentioned earlier, I’m sure he has some sort of Aggie clause so they buyout should be reasonable

Chad still has a chance to make a statement when they play Memphis later this year. A game he will be severely out manned in talent wise.

If he beats Memphis, he's probably going 10-2, 3 years after taking over a 1 win program devoid of talent.

Almost lost to Tulsa. No offense but frick you for suggesting this.

Watching Chad Morris make a competent QB out of Ben Hicks is impressive. At the very least he has an identity and knows how to get the most out of QBs. Sumlin doesn't coach, he's a CEO. It'll be refreshing to have an actual coach.

Talked to some recent SMU players(as in lineman from the past three seasons) while Boulevarding last Friday. I wouldn't count on the SMU defense being able to handle Navy.

Man playing the triple option is like having a lineup full of knuckleballers

Their remaining schedule is

#15 Central Florida
@ Navy
@ Memphis
Tulane

Not sure how you assume that beating Memphis = 10-2?

Even the Tulane game will be hard b/c Willie Fritz has them trending in the right direction and they have a pretty good run game.

So if Morris does win out, then what is your take?

If he wins out? I might not even waste time interviewing anyone else. That would be SMU's first 10 win season since Bobby Collins led them to a 10-2 year in 1984. If you include a conference title win as part of winning out it would be their first 11 win year since 1982 when they were 11-0-1 and finished #2 in the nation. (a year they were kind of fricked out of an AP national title)

Ok, barring that, what's your threshold for wins mandating a Morris look?

If SMU completely wins out including an American title and Bowl win, it would be their 2nd 12-win season, but he would be hired before that bowl game.

Would it be safe to assume the following?

11-2 + Conference Title = Hire immediately
10-3 + Conference Title = Hire immediately
9-4 = Serious consideration
9-3 = Serious consideration

10 wins and/or a conference title it's hire immediately for me.

8-9 wins no conference title he's in the top 3 but I'm making a couple of guys like Petersen say no first. (not naming more at this time b/c I don't know all the various buyout situations for the P5 coaches)

8 wins he is getting one of the first interviews and is more than likely the guy if he kills it in the interview a big name can't be taken.

6-7 wins and he's a fallback option if most everyone says no b/c of the difficulty in selling his SMU record as the new HC to most donors. While I wouldn't be mad at the hire I would also worry about all the meddling from various BMA factions that would likely occur w/him starting off from a perceived position of weakness.

Seriously. Hiring a coach with 2 straight 7 loss seasons in the new CUSA just because he went to A&M would be so us though
