For every person who wants him just because he is an Aggie, there seem to be 2 who don't just because he is an Aggie. Then there is everyone in between who look at it rationally who recognize he is a good candidate with too little experience to make him a sure thing. However, he is probably among the best realistic candidates along with Scott Frost.

Frost has to be going back to Nebraska, correct?

I don't have any problem with us including Morris in the pool of potential candidates we evaluate. We should select the best candidate we can get and if it happens to be Morris, so be it.
I agree that we should not be mandating who is on the new coach's staff, however, we should maintain veto power and use that appropriately. Our AD failed big time by not blocking Sumlin's promotion of internal coaches to the OC position that had no prior OC experience at the D1 level. It should be a standing rule that we do not use OC and DC positions as "on-the-job" training positions.
We should help up and coming position coaches on our staff with their careers. They can take positions with other programs to cut their teeth on coordinator positions.

Frost is going to Florida, if the AD doesn't hire his friend Mullen. The boosters want Frost, though

Looking at Frost's resume, he has 3 years as an OC and is finishing up his 2nd year as HC. Interesting that Florida is zeroing in on him as their top candidate. I wonder who else they have on their short list and why they think Frost is the best candidate?

Matt Campbell at Iowa State is another person we should definitely include in our short list. Looks like he was an OC/OL coach for 10 years at Toledo. He had 4 full years as HC at Toledo and is finishing up his 2nd full year as HC at Iowa St. He has a lot of relevant experience for a coach his age.

Looking at Fuente's resume, he was HC at Memphis for 4 years and is finishing up his 2nd year as HC for Virginia Tech. He was an assistant coach on Gary Patterson's staff at TCU for 5 years and has prior experience as an OC/Co-OC.
I don't know why he would not be on the short list we would evaluate.

He already has a job about as good as A&M. Which is to say that there is nothing he can't accomplish at VT that he could at A&M.
The only thing we could offer is more money and I don't think there is anything in his resume that suggests he is worth $6 mil+. Especially, if you could have Frost, Campbell, Morris for $3.5-$4.5 mil.
The problem with Campbell is he has a huge buyout as well. He would not come cheap either.

Frost and ISU guy aren't attainable

Campbell is definitely attainable

Matt Campbell or the gaining school owes Iowa State $10 Million if he leaves before the end of his third season.

They are certainly more attainable than Patterson, Petersen, Franklin, and the like names that get thrown about.
Having said that, I agree with your premise. There are no sure things available. Even the guys with good resumes but huge question marks are going to be tough to get.
The best reason to go after Morris is, if you are going to go after someone with question marks, at least don't overpay to get him.
IMO that's what we would have to do for either Campbell or Frost.

This is one of my biggest reasons I’d be ok with Morris. I couldn’t care less if he’s an Aggie or not. Excellent OC at Clemson, looks to be turning SMU around as HC, and has ties to Texas high school from when he was a coach in it. All of that plus we don’t have to pay him 5+, smu is paying him 2 mil so if we wanted to get him we could probably do it for 3.5-4.5 million unless we have to start outbidding schools (more likely the longer he stays at smu and does well).
As others have said, if Chad Morris is the last resort of our coaching search, we’re in a pretty good position.

Yeah I don't think that's the best idea

For those clamoring for a big name, "home run" hire.
A wishlist of active, proven head coaches who have won something of significance (conference or national title) is fairly short, and would include men like: Shaw (Stanford); Petersen (Washington); Meyer (Ohio State); Swinney (Clemson); Fisher (FSU); and Saban (Alabama). Maybe you'd also include Dantonio (Mich St.) and Harbaugh (Michigan).
Great coaches, but they have a good thing going where they are. They aren't moving to A&M, unless there is some conflict with their administrations.
Well, who knows what Fisher is thinking, he seems to be getting into shouting matches with psycho fans at games, so maybe he wants a change of scenery. We could ask.
The next coach we hire is probably going to be a guy who has shown potential where he's been, but hasn't broken through yet. Coaches like Morris, Norvell, and maybe Campbell are who we will have to consider. Chip Kelly had problems with the NCAA, I seem to remember, and I've read he doesn't like dealing with boosters and recruiting, so I'm leery of him.
I remember when Spurrier was merely the coach who had done a good job at Duke. Florida didn't have any guarantee he would get it done in Gainesville when they hired him.
