Previews
Perfect Game:
The Aggies enjoyed a strong start a year ago, winning 16 of their first 18 games before the beginning of the SEC schedule, of which they went just 13-17, although they did make a strong push in the conference tournament. Entering 2019 their strength appears to once again be with their pitching staff as they have a very strong projected weekend rotation full of promising lefthanded pitchers: junior John Doxakis, who went 8-5 with a 2.70 ERA a year ago, Asa Lacy, who can work in the low- to mid-90s, touching higher, and Jonathan Childress, a promising and already polished freshman who pitched in the 2017 PG All-American Classic. Mason Cole and Chandler Joziwak will anchor the bullpen to give the team a difficult right-left duo to contend with late. Shortstop Braden Shewmake is an SEC Player of the Year candidate who has hit .327 with 16 homers and 114 RBI the past two seasons, which included his Freshman All-American campaign in 2017. While Logan Foster, Will Frizzell and Zach DeLoach give the team three more experienced pieces on offense, keep an eye on transfers Mikey Hoehner (catcher), Jonathan Ducoff (outfield) and Bryce Blaum (second base) who could give the offense a serious boost.

I'll continue to add more as it gets released these next few weeks.

Today was the first spring practice. Two things in the Texas write up stood out to me.

quote:

There's a talented staff in place that is balanced between right and left handers. John Doxakis and Asa Lacy have progressed tremendously and will be 1 and 2 in rotation with the third spot up for grabs. Childress said it is very possible that A&M will have a completely left handed weekend rotation.

We may go L-L-L so I am thinking Childress on Sundays. That'll be interesting. I wouldn't mind a hard throwing power righty in the middle to mix it up, but ultimately it doesn't matter if they're the best 3.

quote:

The team has a chip on their shoulder after being left out of the pre-season top 25. "The only poll that matters is the final poll," Childress said.

In the words of former Padres draftee, Mr. Football, "Sorry, but you just turned that chip on my shoulder from a Frito into a Dorito". I think we all enjoy the underdog role. I like that our guys are hungry this year.

I'd rather play a tough schedule than one full of patsies.

The SEC schedule is never not loaded. We usually clean up in ooc. Between the games at MMP and midweeks vs Rice(still down), tu, & Houston we’ll face our fair share of tough opponents. I think the goal should be .500 in conference and feeling safely in before the final weekend. Stretch goal of hosting a regional. It will depend on if the top of the line up gets help from the middle & bottom because I pitching should be strong to very strong.

Hop’s projected line up and rotation after the first scrimmage.

quote:

I still think the rotation will be:

Friday: Doxakis
Sat: Lacy
Sun: Childress

Although I thought Saenz looked pretty good today...his performance still keeps his name in the competition.

Lineup:

1. Blaum(4)
2. Hoehner(2)
3. Shewmake(6)
4. Deloach(8)
5. Ducoff(5)
6. Frizzell(DH)
7. Foster (9)
8. Walters(3)
9. Blake(7)

If a couple bats step up this year to help Shewmake I actually think we could be pretty good and surprise some people. I’d like to see Foster a little higher in that order as he think he has potential if he cuts down on the swing and miss

I keep forgetting Blaum was at Ole Miss as well

We only got picked up for 8 games on TV this year. Of the 8 only 3 are at Olsen. That’s a little disappointing. Usually we’re 10-14ish if I’m remembering correctly.

This may help a little.

quote:

This year's schedule also includes four wild card selections, allowing the network the opportunity to determine the best television matchup at a later date.

It’s the Arkansas series that weekend when they have “wild card” selections.

On a related Aggie baseball note Corbin Martin was named the 81st best prospect in baseball. Depending on how things shake out with the rotation, he may get a shot with the big league team this year.

If the t.u. game isn't televised is that because they think poorly of us, t.u. or both?

That’ll be one of the few ooc road games that will be televised. It’ll be on the LHN. There is a chance some of the others get picked up but unlikely or it’ll be on a channel no one gets.

Our 12th Man production value is good enough usually. With Roku’s And other streaming devices it functions like a TV.

We didn't even crack the top 40 for the national college baseball writers.

Coming in under the radar for sure.

Gabe’s projected opening day lineup.

quote:

Finally, here is my projected lineup on Opening Night:

1. Blaum - 2B (R)
2. Hoehner - C (R)
3. Shewmake - SS (L)
4. Frizzell - DH (L)
5. Walters / H. Coleman - 1B (L/R)
6. DeLoach - CF (L)
7. Foster - RF (R)
8. Ducoff / Wingate - 3B (R/R)
9. Blake - LF (L)

* Against LHP, Ducoff could move up to the five-hole to break up the lefties.

It looks like we are significantly deeper this year especially positionally. Last year, we were frantically converting all our IFers into OFers to fill out the lineup and find some answers out there. This year we have enough OF options to slide Ducoff to the dirt and let him compete at 3B. We have 3 options for 2 spots at 1B/DH. And all of this without serious consideration of a single Freshmen, any of those guys could emerge and it would just be a bonus.

Pitching wise, time will tell, but it looks like they have some solid RH bullpen options between Kalich, Nelson, Cole, and Roa. It also feels like for the first time in awhile we are going to have a weekend quality guy on Tuesday nights. Thats the kind of thing the best recent TCU teams have been able to do. It makes them really formidable in the postseason to have 4 good starters.
