If Sumlin doesn't work out here, we'll look at the time from the MSU game to today and think "how the hell didn't we see this coming?"

Further back. I will look to not having enough money for Narduzzi, or the fact we didn't offer JFF first-round pick insurance. Or if Golden would have played against Bama in 2013 than maybe we would have had a two year streak on them. etc. etc. There is always another place, another move that could have gone better.

On the other hand, if we get Bud Foster we might look back at his hire being the start of a title run.

This was so much more than one recruit picking Texas over us. So, so much more.

This is why I was calling Malik the most important recruit in our history. And what went down is what kinda gives me faith.

I mean, Sumlin has been pretty smart so far. He has to see all the pieces turning against him too. The ONLY way he lets this happen if if he has a real deal DC on the line that will be a bigger impact than Malik, or half the recruiting class. Otherwise he has to know today was the day he started to lose his job.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

First Mack was tied to Jefferson. Then Mack was tied to Murray. Now Mack again is tied to Jefferson.

Until the kid decommits I am not worrying about him. He's been all over the place for over a year, so any speculation is pretty senseless at this point.

Yup. The only constant in Mack's recruitment has been us. If we make an acceptable DC hire fairly soon I fully expect him to sign with us.

I've spent my whole life watching A&M do this and I don't get in an uproar when things fall apart. He either fixes it or it's on to the next great hire and watching him screw it up. Either way i will be there every Saturday in one form or another supporting my favorite football team in victory or defeat.

As far as the completely crapped the bed part goes, I'm willing to wait before conceding that part of it and still am not 100% convinced Malik wasn't using the DC thing to hide behind bailing and just doing what his family wanted because, like I said, he could have always given Sumlin a few more days. It wasn't his job to do so but it he was THAT high on A&M and was THAT ambivalent towards Strong and Texas then why not?

We accept mediocrity because we are too nice. We averaged more people per SEC game this year by a wide margin...and we didn't win one home SEC game

It's simple. Sumlin wasn't going to tell Malik where the DC search was going and MJ wanted to hear that. Period. That's why the conversation didn't go well.

Maybe Sumlin told him that waiting a few days wouldn't guarantee him anything.

We have no clue what went down in that Wednesday night call. Seems like Sumlin basically cut bait on the recruit who was his top priority until now.

Maybe Sumlin has started looking for a way out?

I don't think so - I just think it really burns his arse that he couldn't get the support to bring in Narduzzi last time around, when he all but had a top coach locked in, and this time around he doesn't have as quality of options.

Sumlin is doing everything he can to get a top coordinator on campus in my opinion, and it's just proving to be a little tougher sell this go around.

Wouldn't you think it should be a lot easier?

Nah, Sumlin doesn't have the security now he had at the start.

I think we are all missing the real silver lining fellas- at least now we don't have to ban WestCoastAg!

I'm sure there are TONS of quality guys that have reached out to us, including (according to Liucci) Bo Pelini, Durkin, and Gibbs.

But Sumlin wants an elite guy, which is why it's rumored his backup plan is to hire Durkin + another experienced guy.

If Sumlin ends up truly making a great hire, then I have been dead arse wrong today. But I'm just not convinced. Not only does it seem like we've struck out on a number of leads, but the turnover of the staff that he brought in is alarming.

With our defense going downhill at an alarming rate?

Why would anybody try and fix this defense unless they're getting paid 2x what they currently make.

I don't know if that is completely fair. I mean, many on Sumlin's first staff have gone on to be head coaches. That can't be a bad thing three years in. Seems like his hires have been either hit or miss big time.
