From Austin America Statesman:
Few incoming freshmen had more bravado than linebacker Cecil Cherry. After only four practices, he’s leaving Texas.
Cherry’s father told the American-Statesman that Cecil asked for transfer paperwork on Monday. Winston Cherry said he left another voicemail with coach Charlie Strong on Tuesday morning, and he expects Cecil to fly home to Florida on Saturday.
Cecil Cherry, Victory Christian High linebacker who's a part of the Longhorns' 2015 recruiting class. He's from Frostproof, Fla.
Orangebloods first reported that Cecil Cherry had told people inside the program he was thinking about transferring.
“I told Cecil this morning, wherever you try to go, this is going to have to be your home,” Winston Cherry said. “No matter where he goes, I told him, ‘You’re going to have to sit out.’ What he has to understand whatever we choose at this point, it has to be someone that has your best interest at heart.
“We’re not saying Texas is not a bad school. But it’s not designed for his style of defense.”
When asked what defense fits Cecil’s style, Winston Cherry said that most offensive teams spread the field.
When asked to clarify what that means, Winston Cherry said, “I’m quite sure Texas isn’t hurt by this whatsoever. They got Malik (Jefferson) and other ballplayers. That’s how I feel about it. It’s no offense against Texas. This thing about his dream, now you have to live your dream and you woke up.”
In the first few days of practice, Texas linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary got on Cecil Cherry’s case several times. “I guess at this point, him and coach Strong aren’t getting along,” Winston Cherry said.
Winston Cherry said he wanted Cecil to get the paperwork in his hands so Winston could start calling schools immediately.
From talking with Cherry’s father, it’s clear that Cecil’s decision to pick Texas over Tennessee strained their relationship. Winston Cherry said the two didn’t speak for two months.
Still, Cecil Cherry clearly bought into what Strong and the Texas coaching staff was selling.
“Football is getting me out of here, so why wouldn’t I go harder?,” Cherry told the American-Statesman just before national signing day. “Why wouldn’t I take that physicality out on the field?”
Now, it appears “Cecil the Diesel” is on the road elsewhere.
Strong has not issued any public statement on this issue yet. Texas is scheduled to have its first workout in full pads from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Strong is scheduled to address the media afterward.
Other Texas players took to Twitter to voice their thoughts.

0% chance he comes to TN, if that's what you're trying to get at.

Well, that's what I said. Why is there a 0% chance he comes to UT? He was offered by just about everybody.

Someone who was used to being handed things his entire life and then didn't like it when a defense wasn't designed specifically for him?
Sounds like his future will run through Louisville.

He was culled from our class due to his lack of mobility. 0% chance our staff recruits him.
It wasn't a "I'm going to Texas over TN," it was very much an "I'm going to Texas because TN has recruited over me."
See Quarte Sapp and Darren Kirkland.

If you say so. I don't follow UT recruiting, so I'll take your word for it.

I don't think that we flat recruited over him until he looked around. I called this the while time. He needs to be in a conference that rushes the ball between the tackles alot. I.e, not the big 12. He started looking around and we picked up Darren Kirkland. A much higher ranked MLB that's more mobile and better suited for every down. Cherry can be good situationally but I think he's always gonna be a liability on passing downs. He made that bed so he has to lay in it. The staff might take him but I really don't see it happening.

quote:I'm sure the defensive philosophy was brought up during his recruitment. What the hell was he doing when Charlie Strong was talking to him, day-dreaming. Some kids, I tell ya.

I saw this earlier. Quits four days into fall camp? You couldn't figure out during the recruiting process how you would fit into a defense? Now you've lost a year of eligibility.

Tennessee replaced him with Darrin Kirkland (flipped him from Michigan), who is a much more complete MLB and was also more highly rated.

Knowing zero about the kid, I hope LSU gauges interest. We could use some LBs.

"Florida 5" is down to 1.

Won't lose a year, just has to RS his freshman year.

Played against him last year great size but horribly conditioned and dissappeared during the big moments of the game should have beat them but they had a pretty good qb who took them to state and is a walk on at LSU

@max_olson: Cecil Cherry was evidently also disappointed he got the No. 52 jersey at Texas instead of preferred No. 3, per his father.
I hardly ever complain about college football players and the decisions they make, but this kid appears to be a complete bitch.

Lost a year as in he won't be playing anytime soon.

Wow, I'm surprised Tennessee has the room.
So you're saying Texas is a bad school?
