That’s one way of trying to land a 5star.

A&M looked at him to see if they could get a package deal. When it was uncertain we backed off. Umstead isn't terrible, but I think there is a reason he had no D1 offers.

Beating out Jackson state for a kid out of hinds? Impressive.

Can’t fault Mullen for grasping at any straws he can. Needs to make a splash on offense before FSU gets its legs back under it in state, even if it means wasting a scholarship on a JUCO LB

LOL, wow Mullen reaching way down to pull a recruit. At least he beat out Jackson State.

It's not even really a waste, kid's got good size and could be a quality backup this year (we're short on LBs, moreso than any position on the team after switching from 4 - 3 to 3 - 4) and we only used up 19 of our 25 slots last cycle. EDIT: Forget to mention that he is a preferred walk-on, so no scholarship is wasted yet, but I'll wager he gets a scholarship soon anyway.
It's no coincidence that Trey Sanders made a surprise visit on Saturday.
Also, I think Taggart might have stepped on Thibodeaux's toes because he cancelled his trip to FSU over the weekend and he had been posting about a coach who ''was sending the same text to several recruits'' and we started getting crystal balls for a bunch of players that were projected for FSU. It's just a rumor, but I think there's some traction to it. Good news for both Georgia and Florida if true.

He’s not on scholarship. Preferred walk on.

That's how you do it. Trey Sanders is a good back. Seems like the kind of back that can carry a full season load. I don't even know if Georgia is in serious contention for any big time backs this round because of our recent hauls but I would love to have a guy like Sanders in the mix for sure.

Having a head coach that understands this kind of stuff and is willing/able to take advantage of the opportunities that accompany recruiting for the University of Florida is a nice breath of fresh air. The more moves Mullen has made the more confident I am that he is changing the program and we’re going to be back to consistently competing for SEC Championships. The battles with UGA once Florida’s talent level gets back where it belongs will be epic. May be a golden era of the Florida-Georgia rivalry coming up, if what Mullen has done so far is any indication. Just need him to keep making smart moves recruiting and facility wise, then win some games on the field. Excitement around the program is picking up big time.

It all starts with Recruiting. Win the recruiting battles in state = National success in the state of Florida. Florida like most schools needs to lock out schools like Bama and Georgia from raiding the state while keeping the best talent out of FSU and UM. It’s not an easy task but if Taggert is burning bridges we know Richt won’t dominate the state leaving the power struggle ripe for Florida to take it.

Better to have a body than no body

That’s a stupid statement.

I dealt with Umstead a good bit while at Hinds he's a very good kid! Always around the ops building, helping with camps, really anything to do with football he is there! If he doesn't contribute on saturdays he's a great guy to have on the practice field and in the film room. He's not the biggest guy but he has a very high motor and is very football smart! Also doesn't hurt having him as a PWO with who his brother is. If he's given the opportunity I wouldn't be shocked to see him surprise a lot of people and earn some meaningful PT

As I said earlier. the LB position is easily the thinnest position. We have maybe one backup at any given position and we have no idea if they're good or bad. He's got the ideal size, and I think we can whip him into shape no problem. We really, really need bodies at that position though so if we're going to take a chance, it might as well be there.

Umstead is a great name
Its like his mom had a girls name picked out and when the nurses asked the babies name and she said a female name and the nurses informed her that she actually had a boy the mom was like "Okay.... Well, Umstead of that girls name lets go with....." And then she passed out from, the exhaustion of child birth so the nurses just put "Umstead" on the birth certificate.

Smart move. Sanders is a top 10 player. Essentially would you give up 2 schollys to sign the best RB in the nation? I sure as well would.
