I feel the same look at J Winston. Family die hard UA fans and he even grew up as one, but yet left for FSU. Worked out well for him so from his perspective a good choice.

I think Winston was a freak occurrence though. Wasn't he kind of passed over by UA until later in the cycle? People thought for sure he was going pro in baseball and nobody recruited him. He also had an insane relationship with DCraig + Baseball at FSU was a big deal.

I wish he went pro in baseball right about now. fricking rapist

In terms of instate battles, I feel like 9/10 "battles" play out early. Either a kid commits early or Auburn/UA doesn't recruit them because they aren't perfect fits or is obviously interested more in the other school (Tre/Roc/MH for example)

Ronnie Clark and Evans are the only two that I can think of that Auburn would love to have (have remotely have a chance) that UA is after/have at the moment.

This is all true but I think UA also dropped the ball chasing Gunner Kiel as well at the same time. Trying to get both in the class together. UA recruited JW pretty hard but our interest in GK did not help. If the rumblings about baseball were true it would not matter anyway. The word was the ACC allows a player to play MLB and get paid while playing football without any penalty. The SEC does not. You can return after MLB is over for you like Jai Miller but can not do both at the same time. No brainer in my opinion. Take a signing bonus for baseball, play in the minors during the summer, and play cfb n the fall.

Watching that abortion we call the Alabama basketball team probably made his decision easy.

God they suck.

Sorry, but that isn't true.

It is an NCAA rule. Has nothing to do with the SEC. It is allowed even in the SEC. Proof? Anthony Alford is currently a walk-on at Ole Miss while still being a Toronto Blue Jays prospect. Remember Alford? Signed with Southern Miss, ended up inking a ~$700K two-sport deal with the Blue Jays.

Does Bama allow their players to do it though?

Perhaps this is why he can do it? He's not on scholarship. I have no idea, but it would certainly make more sense if that was the case.

You can't get paid though

Justin Woodall was a 2nd or 3rd rd pick for the NY Yankees don't remember and gave up MLB to play at Bama

AU has a guy on roster that caught a TD in the BCS CG Melvin Ray that originally committed to Bama and got drafted and forfeited his amateur status to play baseball and came back after 2 years and loved the state of AL from when he was recruited so AU accepted him as a walk-on and MLB is paying his way

Bama took a guy who just finished playing 4 years in the Padres and Dodgers organizations Jai Miller, same thing MLB is paying in full

A player can't give up their amateur status and continue playing college football at any college

So he isn't playing baseball

The minute he collects a PC from any MLB organization he forfeits his amateur status and loses all eligibility

There is a reason once kids sign endorsements and an agent for the Draft they lose their eligibility

Yes they can. Amateur status is now based on the sport you play. Russell Wilson was a scholarship player and played baseball as well. Endorsements and other things are different.

ACC seems to allow you to do that while the SEC doesn't

I'll go look up Russell Wilson's situation but Im almost positive the only way you can do it is to play college fball and not take money from MLB, endorsements, contracts and the same

Could be wrong and if so why don't more kids use the loophole more for other sports

Chris Weinke

quote:

All-state baseball player and was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 1990 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft (the 62nd player taken overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays.[3] After spending four days in August 1990 on the FSU campus, Weinke put his college career on hold and instead signed a contract to play professional baseball and reported to the Blue Jays minor league baseball system.[1][4] Head football coach Bobby Bowden promised Weinke that he would always have a scholarship offer if he wished to return.

quote:

Although he was only one step away from playing in the major leagues, after the 1996 season Weinke decided to give up professional baseball and took a scholarship at Florida State University

Also, do you remember a guy named Melvin Ray? Also played for the Dodgers before returning to college ball and now playing for AU football.

Originally an Alabama signee in 2008.

I mentioned Melvin Ray Rocky, he had to leave the MLB organization right? That was my understanding when he walked on at AU
