"Last week, Smith's coach said it'd be a week or so until Smith made a final decision on a school. Now, Macon County High School athletic director and coach Larry Harold said Smith won't sign a Letter of Intent with UCLA, Georgia or anyone.
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
“He’s not going to sign a Letter of Intent,” Harold said. “The reason why is because what he went through last week. This just gives us flexibility in case something else unexpectedly happens again.”
Harold has previously been outspoken about coaching changes around National Signing Day. Instead of signing the Letter of Intent, Smith will fill out his financial aid agreement only and officially be a signee when he enrolls in the summer."

I understand players going to schools to play for a position coach, but I would hope they love the university as much to not flip flop when a coach departs.

He can sign the financial aid papers which forces the school to take him but he doesn't have to sign a LOI. If he doesn't then he isn't bonded to the school until the first day of summer classes
Apparently this has been going on in Basketball recruiting a lot.

I would choose the school that I think is going to put me in the best position in 3-4 years. Coaches have a lot to do with that.

Jesus, when will Mark Richt get this kid under control

It has never been required that a kid sign the LOI. They can simply wait and enroll in any school they want upon graduating and the School can offer a scholarship. But there are only a handful of recruits that could get away with this each year. Most schools arent going to keep a spot open until June just on the hope some 5 star may select them from a list of schools.

I don't think that is the intent. What it does prevent though is the situation Smith is in now where the coach lies up until signing day about being there and then dips after the kid signs.
People can save the love for the school crap. A position coach is very important to a players success. If that coach leaves the next guy just might not like you for whatever reason.

He's not changing the rules, there is not rule that a recruit MUST sign a LOI.

The LOI basically functions as a placeholder for the kid and effectively ends the phone calls and tweets and DMs, etc. from other schools. Other than that, the financial aid paperwork is what actually secures the scholarship.

Smart kid. I can't blame him for not trusting UCLA.

Uhhh...nope, but do me a favor & let me know when your team can beat a mediocre bottom feeding team (what your posters like to refer to tLandmass schools as) and can sign an OC that has been gainfully employed by something other than female Olympic sports coordinator in the past 3 years...capisce?

This won't change much. If guys stop signing the LOIs, they'll just change the rules to lock guys in to schools some other way. Fact of the matter is, the NCAA wants recruiting to end at some point in the year. They don't want coaches calling high school kids up until the day they arrive at their committed campuses. This won't change a thing, I guarantee it.

The 5-stars will be the only ones that can get away with this. When you're talking about big-time programs, coaches won't let some 3-star jerk their chain. They'll just move on to someone else.
