1) Saban-When they have to make rules to slow you down, you're doing something right. Saban is the HUNH of recruiters. I'm convinced that he closes his eyes for exactly 1 minute at night. Wakes up, has an oatmeal creme pie and starts his day over again.

2) Les. Others have had bigger splashes lately but Les continues to deliver, always putting together great classes.

The rest. Some guys have big classes but couldn't follow them up. But Saban and Les are clearly at the top of the heap.

Haha Butch has had 1 good class and took about 35 kids. He is still selling a vision for the program. Very similar to Freeze last yr. I think it's way too early to have him top 5 in the conference as a recruiting HC.

And I agree that's a good argument for Les. My argument to that is you're Tennessee. The school recruits itself just as much as LSU or Bama does.

And Sumlin WAS given a team that bad. He flipped 2-3 four stars between the day he started and national signing day. He pulled 5 star talent in year one and had big time commitments before anyone even knew Johnny Football. He pulled 2 out of state top 10 overall players this year and this year has landed the best overall prospect in state at almost every position.

Butch is doing really, really well. But Sumlin is doing better. And pre-Sumlin A&M was worse than pre-Butch UT.

Maybe so. But it's about longevity. Right now I think 4-5 is right which is damn good for y'all's 2nd year in.

I don't know. Even that dipshit Dooley had some good classes and he was terrible at recruiting.

no. UT is still a football brand. People understand that they are a historical powerhouse

Butch is a good enough recruiter to be number two but Stoops is low because of a small sample size?

They have a bigger talent pool too And LSU has no instate competition and before this year almost no one tried to venture into LA too

It's been going on a bit longer than that. They've been losing 2-3 out of their top 10 every year for at least the last 5-6 years. (2012 was particularly brutal, with #s 1 and 3 in the state going to Bama and #2 going to Texas.) But they still do a better job at keeping talent in state than UGA, that's certain enough.

Eh...not exactly. While it's true that Tennessee has a very respectable history going for it, the state itself probably has the worst talent base of any state containing one of the Big Boys of the SEC. Trust me on that. You could do worse than to divide the recruiting bases into tiers ascending northwards. Tier 1 stretches along the bottom, at the coast: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas. Tier 2 is a definite step below in talent base and stretches from South Carolina to Tennessee to Arkansas/Missouri. Then there's Kentucky.

With the difference in recruiting grounds, Tennessee needs an extra leg up to keep pace with the Floridas, Bamas, Georgias, Auburns, and LSUs on the recruiting trail. Kiffin injected a bit of excitement after Fulmer's last season, but they've been in a bit of recruiting slump since then, at least until this year, a slump that mirrors the slide of the program's on-field success. Even under Kiffin, they pretty much had to raid other states *cough*Georgia*cough* to get their five stars. And everybody raids *cough*Georgia*cough*, almost at will.

Lets Compare!

TXAM: 2009-2011 (Pre Sumlin)

6-7 (Independence Bowl)
9-4 (won your division, trip to the Cotton bowl)
7-6 (Meineke Car Care Bowl)

UT: 2009-2011 (Pre Butch)

6-7 (Music City Bowl!)
5-7
5-7

Also to note, we were coming off of Kiffin's hasty departure

So: A&M vs. UT

Wins: 22 vs. 16
Losses: 17 vs. 21
Bowls Apps: 3 vs. 1
Bowl Wins: 1 vs. 0
Conference Championships: 1 vs. 0

Pre-Bucth UT was in a worse position than Pre-Sumlin TXAM.

I hate to have a "who sucked worse" debate, but I just won. [drops mic]

Just a little.

But look at the numbers. In 2014, seven of the top ten Georgia recruits left the state. In 2013, it was eight. Seven again in 2012. In 2011, they managed to hang onto five, so that's something. Back to losing seven in 2010.

I know Georgia is a talent-rich state that can't possibly hang on to every top recruit. But regularly losing 70% of your absolute elite recruits to raids from other states is pretty rough. Compare to LSU, which tends to retain around that percentage in Louisiana rather than lose it.

We've had some good threads on this before so I won't start it up again but I agree that losing top talent every year sucks.

Not really a fair comparison but I see your point.

You want to go five years prior? cause that includes 2 coaching changes, a 5-7 season and a 7-6 season for us. Seriously, saying A&M was in a worse position than UT before each of our respective coaches got here is ridiculous. Have you not been a witness to the 6 years of dumpster fire that our program has been in?

O wait, ya'll only got to the SEC 2 years ago
