Georgia only has six homegrown recruits in its class right now

This has been a polarizing subject for a long time with Georgia fans and you always get "well I don't care where a kid's from as long as he can play," but only having 6 players who are actually from Georgia is sort of a buzzkill in this year's recruiting class.
I always defer to Kirby and trust Kirby, but it still sort of sucks.

Missing on the top 2 sucks. Losing Lonergan sucks as well. The others, meh.

I have no clue if we recruited Lonergan hard or not, but it’s weird to me that he and Holstein who is rated a bit higher both chose Bama. To me, it’s a direct result of the transfer rules. Just interesting to me.

Early in the Saban era Alabama signed 15 or more kids from Alabama. Now they probably range from 6-8. Can’t take them all if you’re taking a national approach.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect Kirby to show some huge preference for Georgia HS players when they show no real loyalty to UGA. It’s his job to sign the best players he can, wherever they’re from.
I also think this particular class in Georgia isn’t particularly deep with impact players. Downs and Haynes are the only ones that I would look at at this point as a big miss. Im sure some others will be very good, though.

Looking at the top 10-15 Georgia prospects, UGA has commits from elsewhere that are higher rated than them in several instances.
I do think we load up on homegrown talent in ‘24. Georgia is LOADED with talent in next year’s group.

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but Georgia's population is twice as large as Alabama's. According to the Google-lator the state of Georgia had 144 players on NFL rosters to start this season and Alabama 61.

Yeah I can't ever remember a year when the state of Georgia had this few players in the top 50 or top 100. The top edge rusher in Georgia is ranked 287th, which has to be a record of some sort. By position here is where Georgia has a better out of state recruit than top instate player according to 247
QB – N/A
RB – NO
WR – YES
TE – YES
OL – UGA SIGNED TOP OL IN GEORGIA
DT – NO
EDGE – YES
LB – UGA SIGNED TOP LB IN GEORGIA
CB – YES
S – NO
Definitely a down year in Georgia, but for Kirby to only get 2 home state kids who were the top ranked prospect at their position is still just weird.

The talent in each state is completely different. Way more talented players in Georgia compared to Alabama. So that argument is irrelevant.

But his town is listed as Phenix City, Alabama on 247sports and On3.

He’s listed the positions where we have a higher ranked out of state recruit

No it hasn't and the vast majority of last year's roster was in-state.
Not sure about the numbers from this year but I'm sure it's close.

I don't think it's an issue as long as Kirby is committed to Georgia.
LSU's 2020 class is a great example of a national class falling apart. Only 5 of LSU's commits were from Louisiana, and only 2 are still tigers.
As if today, only 4 players from that class overall are still tigers.
Ed Orgeron was a shite recruiter.

On3 is suggesting that Travis Hunter maybe be coming home. So at least there’s that.

UGA fans have proclaimed that Kirby Smart will lock up the state of Georgia in spite of the fact that geography no longer has much to do with recruiting. Same as in Florida, Texas, or wherever else, all the major programs recruit nationwide.
That, and the fact that a lot of metro Atlanta residents, where the bulk of the elite prospects are, aren't "from around here" but have moved to Atlanta from other regions, particularly from the midwest and northeast. Those kids and families generally have no ties to UGA.
UGA will continue to recruit well, as they have for a very long time, but same as Alabama and other programs that recruit well, it's nationwide, and instate isn't as important as it was back in the day.

I was not comparing the levels of talent in each state in the least. I was making the point that you can’t entirely lock down a state if you’re recruiting nationally. No matter the depth of talent in said state.

In the era of the portal I think a guy being close to home can help keep them in the fold if they don't start year 1 or 2. I don't think you necessarily prioritize in-state guys because of that, but I think you will see that a bit.

I don't know if you're old enough to remember this buddy, I'm assuming you're not, but there was a year when Richt signed more recruits from Florida than he did from Georgia and it was a big old school Dawg message board point of debate and contention.
