Always has. But there's also "you shop, we shop" too.

I think Bama should shop.

My theory on Bama taking this kids verbal is that Saban knows he isn't going to qualify but hoped it would help with landing Brown from Arkansas. Now that Brown has announced for Arkansas, I think Byers will eventually be dropped from Bama. It is absolutely no secret the kid will have major issues enrolling next summer.

At best he'll get asked to grey, in hopes that he moves on.

You're an idiot. The Arkansas fans could not have been expected to be more generous in this thread.

Umm. He's the #2 DT on our board behind only Marvin Wilson. I can ASSURE you we don't want him going anywhere unless grades don't work out. As of now, he's expected to have a better chance of making it than not. Even so, I hope we have a good Asian tutor lined up to take his tests for him, as he's probably the most explosive DT I've seen on film this year.

Right there's the difference in systemic ethics bending that is permeated throughout the culture of Alabama football.

At 98% of the football playing universities in the country, the fans, boosters, admin, academic staff, coaches etc would just accept that a kid isn't good enough in the classroom to qualify and sadly accept that the player won't be contributing on the field for them or allow them to devalue the degrees at their institution.

At Bama, USC, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, aTm, Penn St., Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma St., Youngstown St., Oregon, NW Missouri St., Baylor and Notre Dame these programs will find whatever means necessary to get a talented player eligible and on the field.

But really. For taking my post completely seriously (about the Asian tutor part), go stick your tongue in a wall socket.

This holier than thou shtick with Bret Bielema, among Hog fans, is interesting at best. If you want to argue that Alabama can take a chance on Byers moreso than Arkansas, due to Arkansas not wanting to disrupt relations with FHS, I can believe that.

But among the reasons why Bielema left Wisconsin, was the difficulty in getting borderline academic cases into school.

This isn't 1985. None of those schools are breaking academic rules that are in place to get a kid in. And if Alabama is, they need to do a better job. Because some talented kids have been lost over their transcripts. Some after they were already enrolled for a spring and summer semester.

It's fair to say there is something else to go along with the potential grade issue..."character" has been brought up around local recruiting circles.

I have no idea...just adding more infomation

WTF are you talking about? That's not a Bert problem. It's not his job to get "borderline academic cases" into school. The test results determine that. What is he supposed to do?

He already did it. He remedied his two biggest issues at Wisconsin. He left for Arkansas to have a larger talent pool to recruit from. And he left for a school and conference that has more leeway in getting kids into school.

Not claiming to be 'holier than thou', in fact we don't worry about 'thou'. We worry about 'us'.
We don't have the top to bottom depth to take chances on players with borderline or below academics or (and not saying this is the case with Byers) questionable character.
Too much work to do here without the distractions of such issues.
Saban, he just processes them. His depth is good enough it's not much of a problem.
We are still trying to build the top to bottom quality players we can depend on.

There was a feature on Fayetteville's D in the paper yesterday. Byers wasn't mentioned once.

Funny that a top 10 DT wouldn't be mentioned by his coach as being one of the leaders of his defense and one of the players he was expecting to have a big season.

Byers might not even be on the team by the time the season is over with.

We are very VERY careful about in state offers if there's any question.
LSU is exactly the same way, as I would imagine the same across the conference.

ETA: How would an Arky offer affect his decision? Is this a Caleb Roddy type situation?

He is never talked about, so it's hard to answer that question.

Now we have competing views here. I should have bit my tongue earlier ITT, but sometimes fandom gets in the way.
