From what I have heard, the defensive scheme changed and he is more of a 3-4 nose (Terrance Cody) and his role didn't really have a spot in the new system.
I could be off on what is natural position is, but I heard that on a podcast from former Alabama staffer Tyler Siskey.

We ran the same system in 2023 and he was almost non-existent. Wouldn't be surprised if it clicked again with Pete, though, as his issues are entirely focus and body shape driven.
His history makes it clear that he has to really be locked in and fully focused on his health and body to be able to play at this level. It was pretty clear that he came in locked in on that before year 1 in shedding all that bad weight and getting prepared to play and really performed, but it wavered before year 2 and it really showed.

When you're constantly calling people bitches and whatnot, it's a red flag for overcompensation. McVay is objectively fat. It doesn't take a trained eye to spot that. If he's willing to lose some weight in order to be a good football player, I'm all for it.
