Jake's Take: Carl Lawson

Auburn got a huge commitment Saturday night when four-star Alpharetta (Ga.) native Carl Lawson pledged to the Tigers. Lawson becomes the Tigers' fourth four-star commitment and adds a huge boost to an already impressive class. Lawson is ranked the number eight strong side defensive end by Rivals.

Breakdown

The 6-foot-3, 245 pound strong side defensive end posses great speed off the line and is able to beat nearly every offensive lineman he faces in high school. Lawson also has great hands at the point of attack which allows him to maneuver the offensive player instead of being just a one gap player.

Another great quality Lawson posses is his lateral quickness. He can really cover a lot of space because of his natural instinct, and the great angles he takes to the ball carrier. Even when the opposing offense runs a perimeter play to his opposite side Lawson is able to effect the play due to his lateral quickness.

I think with a little bit of practice, and extensive time in the film room Lawson could become an inside linebacker at the next level. Lawson has good enough speed and lateral mobility to be able to become a presence with his hand off the ground.

A linebacker has to be able to explode through contact, and Lawson does just that. His play reminds me of a great former Mississippi State player named Jamar Chaney. Chaney was a great player laterally, which allowed him to be in on many tackles. Unless Lawson blows up in the weight room his freshman season, I think he is a viable candidate for the inside linebacker position.

No matter what position Lawson ends up playing, I believe he will make an immediate impact for the Auburn defense, and is just another feather in the cap of this coaching staff. Defensive line coach MIke Pelton did an excellent job recruiting Lawson, and is becoming a force on the recruiting trail for the Auburn Tigers.

Would love to see linebackers this big and fast at AU. Don't know if he will end up there, but glad to have him either way.

Auburn in top three for Jordan Wilkins. Rivals 250 all-purpose back.

In a 247 update on Bateman, he said he talks to LSU, AU, and UF weekly and Bama bi-weekly. Looks like Krags, Loeffler, and Pease are putting in some work.

The work is worth it. The kid was easily the best QB at the Elite 11 camp in Texas yesterday according to 247

We're waiting on bigger targets to start narrowing their lists (Bateman, Olsen, Rettig, etc)

Bateman is visiting us next week. You guys don't want the next Cam? Did he peak in HS? The reason I ask is every AU fan here was pimping him two years ago.

ETA: also LSU is the only SEC school Bateman has plans to visit ATM. That will likely change though.

He isn't a runner.

No, he actually is a bit of a project, could develop into a great QB

Because he's local and Malzahn loved him.

Not true. He plans to visit Bama, Auburn, and Florida in June
