It's sucks that the only reason Bama gets any LBs or DTs is because of the JACK LB position.
If Saban still ran his 43 with no Jack, Bama would be where Ole Miss is right now. It is detrimental to every single prospect's recruitment and could not compete with LSU and Auburn if not for that position...

Is this an accurate representation of Bama's recruiting strategy for LB/DL?
Maybe 5% of the high school teams in the country run a 3-4. Even fewer than that run the kind of 3-4 we do. So we are having to evaluate front 7 players based on how they will transition from playing DT in a 4-3 to DE in a 3-4 or DE in a 4-3 to OLB in a 3-4. If Saban can accurately predict how much kids are going to grow and how they are going to react to a college S&C program, I'd love to know how he hasn't won the lottery multiple times by now. If Allen gains 40 or 50 pounds like Upshaw did, he could grow into a DE. I have no doubt that the staff wants him as an OLB because he is a monster off the edge, but who the frick knows how much more, if any, he is going to grow? These are 17 and 18 year old kids we are talking about. You simply cannot predict their physical development.
Also, lulz at TTs crying about Bama recruiting on the LSUrb.

The problem with Mac Alexander is he seems determined to have his brother pla with him and I do not see him getting a schooly to.

Meh. Urban Meyer used "the next Percy Harvin" line on 3-4 players per class his last 3 years at Florida and it worked on some kids who were nowhere near Harvin's level of player.
One thing I feel about our pursuit of the Jack position is that we are on Year 6 of the Saban regime and we have yet to land a "true" Jack LBer. Yeah Upshaw was a beast for us, but he in no way was a prototypical Jack like Jason Taylor. Truth be known, Allen is the closest thing to that though.
However, to combat that stigma we've gotten, the highest drafted defensive player we've had since Saban got here was a DE. Like someone said above, I believe several players in each class COULD be Jacks for us, but no one knows how they will develop moving forward.

We get great LBers every year due to our scheme. Most recruits with half a brain know there can only be one Jack on the field at a time, so even though they could POTENTIALLY play that position for us, they have to earn it first.

Ask him to list allllll these players that Bama recruited as Jack who should not have been. Have there been a couple who switched positions (Ed Stinson comes to mind)? Yes, but there have been a couple that have switched at every other position as well.

Jack linebacker continuing to pay dividends. One of the best trolls in Saban's arsenal. Just look at that tts post.
Just got caught up on the last few pages of the thread.

Speaking of Upshaw, he gave one of the best quotes I've ever seen a recruit give when being told he could be the "next" so and so:
Tubs told him that if he came to Auburn he could be the next Quentin Groves. Courtney's response was that he could be the next Quentin Groves at Alabama.

It's been a while since I've heard that quote, truly a classic and fits Upshaw and his career to a T.

Talk about having the right qualifications

I love how you left out:

Oh well, it is what it is. It's working to a T for Saban and Smart. They won't change it because it's so successful

He may have said that too, but he did say he could be the next Quentin Groves at Alabama. See Mags post above. He remembers it too.

I can't help either of you, I remember something along those lines, not specifically if he said Groves or Upshaw

How come Boom doesn't get shite for offering the same exact kids as Bucks?

Because he coaches at Florida.

No hate TTs. You know kids get promised at every position that they will be the next "insert former great players name at the prospective school doing the recruiting position."
I have seen multiple kids say they are gonna be the next Bo, Herschel, Tebow, Trent, Dareus, Julio, Harvin, etc. The list goes on and on.

Well suck me sideways. That's the last time I list you as a reference.

Give Boom time. His "Buck" pitch will gain notoriety if he continues to land quality guys at that spot.
