So it is the same as before except that there also has to be room under the 85?
Yes but they get a little more lattitude from one article I read. Like before a player that started as a counter in the fall and graduates in Dec was a counter for the whole year. Now my understanding from one article they can be replaced if they graduate in Dec and not returning in the spring to make room for an EE.
And yes alot more processing in Dec instead of the later parts of spring.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there has always had to be room for an EE under the 85 so that's nothing new. The room is usually produced from seniors who graduate in December and come off scholarship, thus freeing up schollys for the EE.
There have been cases where a team has a small senior class with few players coming off scholarship and that limited the number of EEs. It almost prevented us from allowing Dee Hart to EE a couple years ago and it was the issue with Patrick Miller at LSU this year. Could be an issue for Bama again this year as we have another small senior class and more and more recruits are wanting to EE
Basically, the rule is that you can't have more than 85 on scholarship and enrolled as a full time student at any point during the year. You can have more than 85 in the summer because they're not full time.

That is correct you can at no time have more than 85 on your roster.

Room is created by seniors who graduate in December and underclassmen who declare for the draft. Those players are not on scholarship for the spring semester and can therefore be replaced under the 85 limit by EEs

EEs bring to great advantages to a team.
1) A player that comes in in August or aometime in the summer starts his eligibility clock in the fall season. So they will get 4 fall seasons, but only 3 spring seasons. Yes they will still be at the university in the spring of their senior year but will not be out with the team, but still a counter. Those numbers could be 5 fall and 4 spring if they redshirt.
But an EE starts their eligibility in the spring. Meaning they will play 4 springs and 4 falls(5&5 if they redshirt) for the school.
So an EE will get a full spring under before the their first game season and basically and extra season to train.
2) EEs also help the recruiting numbers. Even if the player does not graduate until the spring, their eligibility runs out when their fall season officialy ends inlcuding bowl games. Their spot as a counter ends and an EE can take their place even if they do not graduate in Dec.

underclassmen who declare for the draft
My understanding is that part is now correct with the new rule. Because before if a player still had eligibility left and started classes in the JAN they would count and could not be replaced. Remember alot of players do not declare until Feb and the deadline. Now my understanding is if the staff is made aware of it before classes start they can be replaced.

Sometimes its hard to take you seriously. Liner at LB and watching him at LBer in a 7 on 7.
They are not in pads and its touch football. Liner is almost 280 pounds and still has a year in HS. He is already too big to play jack and that is without being in a college program. He will add weight. There is no way Liner will ever play LB.

I think the deadline for declaring is right around January 15th. Classes start a little before that but a new player can actually start anytime within the 1st 2 weeks of class. So, if a junior waits til the last minute to declare, there's still time to bring in an EE to replace him; he just may miss the first week of class.

From what I have read is the new rule allows more freedom and no need for all the previous loop holes, but am in the process of getting the official version from the SEC office to see the exact language because so many different things have been written about it.

UGA may take as many as 33 this year, but it should be at least 31. They are definitely using the EEs though as the new JUCO DB offer went out to a guy that can be an EE when it sounds like Letman isn't going to be able to do it.

So yall feel like yall won't get Beckwith or Williams?
I don't think so. I'd love for Bama to land Williams, best passrusher in the nation in my mind.
Beckwith is a good player in his own right, but I've heard he's not being made a top priority.

Liner looked really good at LB today.
Again, correct me if I'm wrong, that's just the impression I got from reading everything.

Would the fact that LSU is pushing so hard for Lewis Neal be good news for Bama with Greg Gilmore?

I'm done talking about any recruit that Bama is not recruiting for the 2013 class OTT. It's amusing how all of the other fanbases have to flock to the Bama thread to flame over nothing. frickem all.
Thats why I said what I said yesterday. Its hard trying to find anything strictly about Bama on here.

ETA: In the same interview he says not to take recruiting too serious unless you get direct quotes from the recruit.
