It's somewhat skewed because Florida has a lot of passes in the back field on swing passes, jet sweeps, and screens.

Well, maybe that is what it indicates more than anything.
That's kind of the point... even if yards per attempt is high, the QB is throwing easier to complete/shorter passes rather than throwing downfield.

Same way you look at yards after contact or yards after the catch.

Take what the defense gives you.

It isn't a bad thing until the defense adjusts.
Then the question is if Florida can adjust too

It's not the same, as you don't get negative yards in those situations (Or at least it is exceedingly rare). Every jet sweep is -3 air yards, every swing pass is -5 air yards. Including them skews the stat to appear to be that Florida almost never completed passes beyond the line of scrimmage. It does, they are just countered (in this stat) with significant behind the LOS completions.

not necessarily. the line of scrimmage is always considered the "0" yard mark for every stat line. anything behind that line is a negative.

For true counting stats, it’s makes sense to use this metric.

But to really evaluate a QBs ability to air it out with accuracy, I personally think the totality of the distance the ball is in the air before the receiver catches it should be favored in. Thus, for a different stat entirely, you utilize the yardage from the exact spot the QB threw it.

Yea Florida's offense seems to be very much a horizontal offense as opposed to a vertical offense.

It isn't a flawless measure of QB performance though. While some YAC come from individual effort by the receiver, some is also due to the QB hitting the receiver in stride vs making them stop or dive to make the catch.

It's not meant to be a measure of QB performance at all. Just provides context to QB and WR performances and offensive concepts as a whole.

I’ve always thought it’s silly when they say, “95 yd td pass” when it’s a 10 yd pass, but I think we’ve all got used to it, and know, the qb isn’t throwing 95 yd bombs.

Crazy stat. Napier is worse than Muschamp in some ways on offense.

sure it does. i've explained twice now in the thread. LOS is the 20 QB hands ball off at 18 RB is tackled at the 30 Did the RB have a 12 yd gain or a 10 yd gain? Same rule applies to passing. the LOS is always the 0 yd line no matter the stat line. anything behind it is negative. anything beyond it is positive.

Sure you did. And a fine explanation, at that! Wtg.

I am saying the term air yards should be something else.

In my scenario, it traveled 65 yards with 10 linear yards of field.

I’m not disagreeing with you. Just the term.

Except for FGs. FGs are measured from the spot the holder places the ball + 10yds for the endzone.

It would make more sense to count air yards from the spot of the throw, but it would be too difficult to gauge and record for the stat keepers. So, the LOS is the 0 yard mark as you say

I think this is not super interesting unless compared against other teams
