“Won a national championship” is not an automatic home run hire

In the past 12 years the SEC has been home to the following coaches that won national championships exactly once:
Gene Chizin
Ed Orgeron
Jumbo Fisher

They all have in common needing an amazing QB to bail them out; all of them were mediocre at BEST once said QB was gone.

Kelly, who has not won a national title yet, was a much better hire. Kirby was a DC when he was hired as an HC, and he’s won a ton plus a title of his own.

I simply remember when talking heads would talk about how many coaches who were in the SEC who had won a national title. Who cares when you’re in the same club as Orgeron and Chizik?
