Who is the last 8-4 conference champion in an AQ conference?

Possible? In theory, but so incredibly unlikely it's not worth discussing.

You could make it a 50 team playoff and it will still be more meaningful than whatever happened in 2020 with Bama

It will only make the SEC look more powerful when we come out with another title.

No. The longer the playoff the harder it is to win it all.

It could be argued that LSU and 2019 was the last natty that wasn't tainted by NIL and COVID and starting this year a 12 team tournament. Even 2019 was heavily influenced by the transfer portal.

It is doubtful that anything would be less meaningful than the times the season ended with 2 champions so it will be more meaningful than that. It will be more meaningful than the majority of natty's that have been nothing more than a beauty contest where a really good team played one bowl game (or none in the case of Notre Dame) against what may have been a good team or may have been a team that played a shite schedule who got their arse whupped in the bowl game....prior to the BCS almost every "natty" has some legitimacy issues...and even the BCS nattys have some legitimacy issues. The playoff will be better than anything that has gone before it but it is still somewhat illegitimate because of the AQ and differences in schedule. Basketball more or less gets it right because there are 64 teams in the tournament, some of whom have to win one more game after the regular season to get in the tournament. There are no AQ for seeding purposes and SOS is considered. Given that you can't play 2-3 football games a week for many reasons this is not practical for football, the 12 team playoff is better than what we have had to date. 16 and no AQ seeding would be more legit.

Watered down was when teams like 1994 Miami and 1997 Tennessee got to play for a national championship instead of having actual #1 vs #2 matchups those years

For sure.

We will no longer be able to rely on the dependable "eye test"

Wisconsin in 2012 after going 4-4 in the Big12 while Ohio St was on sanctions.

They beat a 2 loss Nebraska team, 70-31. Nebraska would also lose it's bowl game and finish the year with 4 losses.

That’s not “watered down” so much as it was the Rose Bowl being difficult.

Getting into the tournament with a 9-3 or 10-2 record is hardly deserved IMHO.

These situations will work themselves out in general.

Going 10-2 will be really good some years depending on your schedule

Was it deserved when you didn't even play in a conference championship game and got in?

Yes, conference championships had nothing to do with the previous format.

If the conference championship was about putting the 2 best teams against each other, Georgia wouldn't have even made the game. Georgia literally benefited because of AQ status in the conference championship.

And that happened multiple times.

AQ is one of the reasons why the new playoff format sucks arse.

There are NFL teams who won a Super Bowl with more losses.

They still cashed the checks and wore the rings.
