We're talking some years down the road, when/if the College Football Playoff expands to eight or more teams.

Just think on this now: "Who was the team ranked #1 in the very first College Football Playoff Poll?"

Most people will almost assuredly think either Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida State, or even Oregon were ranked #1 when that initial poll came out in 2014. Hard to believe the real answer to that question is Mississippi State.

Easiest answer to that question ever. Why wouldn’t they assume Mississippi State? Especially after they run the table this season.

Exactly. JoMo drags his sack on Saban's forehead this November and becomes legend

didnt Sumlin beat Saban that year?

JoMo is gonna beat him this year. Saban doesnt have a book on JoMo. State loses too much and will not be able to beat Bama in 2019. But 2018 is going to hurt Bama fans

Them being number one was as big a joke as byu winning the national title. They came to Tuscaloosa number one and the excitement was the same as Vandy coming in. After the game it was just ho-hum, we beat state.

I guess the voters thought it was baseball season.

What State and Ole Miss did that season for about 10 weeks was unreal. To bad they have a salary cap now. But I doubt we'll ever see both schools in the championship talk with both ranked in the top 3 again. Probably the only year where I somewhat wanted them to do well. I was looking forward to an 11-0 vs 11-0 egg bowl. Of course the horrible first quarter or so vs Alabama kinda nipped that in the bud and we never really regrouped. Was a fun ride though and very cool to see most of the rest of the country embrace it.

I already saw a question on a sports trivia app -

This state had two teams ranked in the top four of the first College Football Playoff rankings.

Wasn't Alabama, Florida, California, Texas or Michigan - It was Mississippi.

If we both ever go into the Egg Bowl 11-0 the fricking world is going to implode before kickoff.

That was a fun few weeks for both schools.

You’re welcome

Also hold they record for the fastest team to go from unranked to #1.

State unfortunately can only put their best teams together when they have to play Bama on the road.

2010 State was damn good but didnt land Newton and wasnt good enough at QB to win the West. Lost close games to Auburn, LSU, and UPig

2014 State had to play Bama on the road again for the SEC West title and couldnt pull it off on the road

2018- State has its best team in school history- has to play Bama on the road. Makes for an interesting year

I remember hearing from actual Bama fans (not bandwagoners) at the time that that game was a top 5 atmosphere all time at Bryant Denny.
