If he wins......contract extension.
Posted on 9/12/22 at 4:17 pm to Between TheHedges
he could go 0-12 and he's coming back next year.
ETA: I know they have a win this year. Point still stands.

Naw. It’ll be okay.

That cute little dog of theirs probably needs a pooper scooper. Gotta keep things neat. Sure don’t want those adorable toy soldiers and milkmen slipping on poopoo. Get Jimbo a scooper and a pail. He might be able to manage that

His buyout is something like 80M. Think about that.
That's about equal to an entire year's share of conference TV money that's in the new contract if I remember correctly. That would sting a little.

the Corp already has one for horse shite.
Always be prepared for shitty situations. It's what Ags do.

They owe him $90 million dollars.
That's a lot of money for A & M to forfeit!

I think the biggest issue is Jimbo really faces no pressure. Firing him is probably not on the table, and without that threat I do not see him giving up the play calling.

Does the contract extension they gave Jimbo sound like the contract extension Auburn gave GusBus?
And both guaranteed money.

that one still stings me.
I really hope there is a market correction. While I doubt salaries go down, I hope these buyout clauses get reduced.
No one making the money these guys do should be able to escape accountability by getting paid like that.

Your probably right. But I tbh if I were A&M after Jimbo ends in complete disaster, I’d try it. Give like a base salary of 2 million and then have a bunch of performance related bonuses, recruiting rank, record in conference, bowls, playoffs etc. with the wining a conference or national title having a huge payout like 20 million. While also having a bunch of penalties. So if you’ve got a sub .500 record the salary is reduced to 1 million, a loss to a G5 school is 250k. Severe bad performance (Back to back sub .500 seasons, a cumulative record of under .750) leads to firing regardless of years left on the contract. ETA I know there are already incentives in these deals, I should clarify and point out they should be the bulk of the comp.
Great contract. Good luck finding a coach that will agree to it. If it were that easy it’d be happening that way everywhere. Why would a coach agree to those terms when he can go coach somewhere else without such conditions?

No this is stupid

He won't be fired, they can't justify that expense.
But what they could do is make sure his private life is squeaky clean. If there's any fun with co-eds, or drugs, or anything that would embarrass the university they could terminate him for cause.

Are you sure this wasn’t on the sidelines after the “hill billies” from Appalachia kicked the crap out of the Aggies?

His wild eyed rages should qualify. The problem is that A&M defended him. But it’s only a matter of time before he goes on another.

I know it would be difficult given that they could walk (though if other unis wised up maybe it would be easier) but look at it from the standpoint of taking a risk.
A&M went for the big hire with Jimbo, a guy who has a title under his belt and was touted as a great developer of talent. It did not work out and a lot of money was dumped into it. Now instead of doing that again, take a risk in an unknown coach, maybe from the lower tiers who is really innovative and has a confident plan. At the very worst they end up where they left off but now they are not out of 100+ million.
I know that there is always the argument that they have to be a great recruiter, if they don’t have the connections to get top talent they have no chance. They need to have played for or won a title already. They need to have years of SEC/P5 experience etc. Well there is truth to that but eventually you will reduce the list of candidates to like 5 coaches that you have to pick with outrageous contracts, rinse and repeat.
I say go bold try something different.

I like to think that Scott Woodward was an agent saboteur and always intended to saddle a crappy expensive coach at LSU’s division opponent prior to taking his dream job. Farfetched, I know, but fun to believe.
