He led the nation in attempts per game THIS YEAR. He was in a time share of sorts prior.
Had over 40 carries in his last two games and over 30 (28 vs UT) in 4 of his last 6 games vs FBS opponents.
Still has two possible games left as well.

This isn't some sort of phenomenon. A handful of really good backs have 345-375 carries most every season. A lot of them have had pretty solid, long NFL careers. And most of them had already had seasons with more carries than Derek has, not to mention Derrick doesn't run back kicks/punts or catch many balls out of the backfield.

Fournette is not just going in the first round. He's going in the top 10 picks - probably top three. He's much better than any back to ever play at Alabama or LSU. Why? Because anyone with eyes can see it. I've watched the best backs those schools have produced, from Bobby Humphrey to Kevin Faulk. Fournette is just plain better.
Henry merits a second round pick, though. That assumes he can run routes and catch.

He's definitely better than Gurley. But yes, top three is pushing it. I think Bo and Hershel have an edge on Fournette, but I can't think of another SEC back who was as good as him. Maybe Emmitt Smith. He was an odd duck, but extremely effective. Powerful, great eyes, and shifty quick. He had nowhere near Fournette's speed, but he was extremely good.

Not saying Henry isn't fast, but a lot of athletes run slower at the combine than they do at the Opening. Landon Collins, for example, ran a 4.42 and won the SPARQ championship, only to run over a tenth slower at the combine at 4.53. He did gain a good bit of weight in college FWIW, but that's just one example.

Except anyone who watched Landon in games knew he was on the slower end of that scale.
Anyone who has watched Derek run away from cornerbacks in the SEC knows that he is still incredibly fast, especially for his size. He is a legitimate break away back.

Yes, he does have breakaway ability and he is a home run threat, which is exceptional for a guy his size. That doesn't really explain 40 time though. 40 time is about acceleration more than anything. I know Henry has good top-end speed and a long stride, which does help him outrun SEC db's. I'll use another example. Jeremy hill had multiple touchdowns of over 50 yards in his LSU career, and I never once saw him get chased down by a db, or anyone else in fact. He was burning guys left and right. His best 40 time at the combine was a 4.64 at 235, which is very respectable, and to be honest, plenty of speed for an NFL back who just needs to move the chains. He himself was a home run threat with a 40 time in the 4.6's, because his top-end speed was great. Carlos Hyde also could outrun db's at about the same weight and a 40 time of 4.63.

LOL. How do you explain LF running for less yards against Alabama than nearly every other back that played against them? He's a good RB but he's just not as special as you LSU homers think.
