Fluke?

2010 was the fluke. What you see now is the norm. Sure, you can keep him one more year and pay him his full salary, but that won't be any cheaper than canning him now.

Plus, the buyout is nowhere near 9 million. 7 tops.

Having 1 win at this point in the season is not the norm for Auburn...

Maybe Chizik, but not Auburn.

Yep. He's not going anywhere at least this year. Nine million is a ton of change just to fire a coach. To be honest, if they fire Chizik that means replacing the entire staff. So add nine million plus new contracts... you are talking 15 million or around that in contracts.

It's 9 million to replace the entire staff IIRC

I will be physically ill if you hire Petrino.

frick Jeff Long in that case.

Although it does show how much homerism there is on this board considering Auburn fans spent all of last year arguing that Chizik was a better coach than Petrino and should be ahead of him in the coaching rankings but now Auburn fans are falling all over themselves at the thought of hiring Petrino.

I don't know.

But in this case, 100%.

At the least, he would agree to payments over time IMO

That's how buyouts work. Then if he takes another job, whatever they pay him cuts into how much Auburn would be obligated to pay him.

Yeah, apparently someone at Auburn grew a few brain cells after the Tuberville debacle. Tuberville got every penny of his buyout...half immediately when he was fired, and the other half 30 days later.

Correct me if I am wrong (I may be), but Chiz is making a lot less than $7M?

Also, if you fire him now you have to pay him $7M plus pay the new coach?

So I would think it would be significantly more costly to fire him now.

Could be more if you hired a current head coach then had to pay his buyout.

Assistants will get jobs quickly; so, you can go ahead and knock that off the top. You are dealing with Chiz and Chiz alone. He will sit out for a year before getting on as a coordinator with an NFL or CFB team; therefore, you can knock about half a million off his buyout per year after the first year.

You are looking at paying Chiz about 4 million to 4.5 million over 4-5 years. Don't get hung up on the 9 million. You guys have ways to mitigate that.

I would be shocked if AU hired Petrino. It will not reflect well on that program.

How would that reflect negatively? They hire a coach that can win and run an offense that suits their current roster. I think it would be a pretty good hire, and he will come cheap.

Just curious, who were then top candidates in 2008? I really can't remember

There was a contract with Will Muschamp's name on it, and he was getting ready to sign it when Jay Jacobs performed a coup and hired Chizik behind TPTB's back. Jacobs' days we're numbered if Muschamp became Auburn's coach, so he was looking out for ole No. 1.
