Why is it so hard to find joy as a college football fan?

Time flies and the season will be over before we know it.

Tennessee is 5-1 for only the third time in the last 20 years and just beat Florida for only the third time in 20 years. Fans are griping. Worrying about next week and the week after that. Very little joy.

Alabama is 7th and in a good spot to make the playoffs and Georgia is 5th and in a good spot to make the playoffs. Fans are complaining and griping and worried about next week and next month.

...It reminds me of World Cup soccer, where no fan base is happy and every fan basethinks their team should be playing much better, even when they make it to the semifinals and finals. "We just won the World Cup. But our team still played sort of shitty and should've played way better."

Sometimes too much FANaticism makes being a fan difficult.

You grow out of it as you get older. Sports gets put into it’s proper perspective after life kicks you around for a few decades.

Because CFB history shows that we already know who really has a chance at the championship and who doesn’t. Yes, things can change but usually they don’t. Alabama will probably lose games, so their fans are already disappointed. Tennessee sees the writing on the wall with Nico struggling. Georgia went down 28-0 against Alabama and didn’t exactly blow out a bad Auburn or a bad Miss St team.

So the playoff keeps things interesting, but this is the first year for it. We’ll see if it impacts typical CFB trajectories.

Older fans gripe just as much anybody and just as likely to start worrying about next week after the week after that right after a big win.

Fanaticism is an attempt to fill a void one has in life. Like most other worldly pursuits (sex, money, drugs, gambling etc) it will almost always leave you unfulfilled.

Georgia lost it when Vandy beat Alabama and Georgia lost to Alabama. How time flies!

This is the most joy I've experienced since 2012. Even if my Ags don't make the playoffs, this season has been fun as hell already with more to come.

This for sure. The game is a lot softer than it was 20 or so years ago. Plus too many damn commercials now.

Completely agree.

Fans have gone mental and reached the point where not being in the hunt for a national championship means your team “sucks;” and coaches are run off after 2-3 years on the job.

But perspective changes as life happens.

We said our earthly goodbyes to my father a few months back. Aggie football was everything to him—not just the game, but the intangibles. So I’m seeing this season through his eyes and enjoying every snap, penalty, score, and win/loss more than ever.

Don’t allow the madness of others to steal your joy.

That's pretty profound, I think. You could throw "social media" and "politics" in there to update it for the 2020s.

Nothing will ever top LSU beating tennessee in the SEC championship in 2001 for me. College football is all or nothing now.

I’m having the time of my life.

Texas is good again, finally, I got to see Ann Arbor and Michigan play in the Big House, I got to see Texas embarrass OU, and Georgia is coming to town for one of the marquee games of the year.

Those of you who think that finishing the season #1 is the only thing that matters are destined to lead a sad and empty life.

Enjoy the week and look forward to the games, and then do it again and again. Win or lose, every year I will see numerous plays that I will never forget.

Yeah I try to pinpoint when this happened and why? Is it just a societal thing? I mean I remember growing up in the 90s and being regaled with tales of Auburn going to Sugar Bowls in the 80s like it was the Holy Grail of the sport. Now half the team's players can't even be bothered to play in the game if they make it.

Man, that's because your team has been damn near perfect in recent years. UGA is still VERY good! I understand you though. Despite the garbage most of us hurl at fan bases of other teams here every week, the biggest critic of your team is you because you know them better than fans of other teams. I'm not immune to it and I would guess most others on here aren't either.

UGA is fine dude.

Gripe about what? That the game isn't as good as it use to be because it's been changed to fit the needs of corporations? Sure.

About how the team is doing in general and how we take the losses etc? Not so much. I learned a long time ago it's dumb to get emotionally attached to things you have no control over because it's just a source of frustration. Your kids will give you all of that anyone ever needs.
