Don't do it. You might get stuck with the interim

It might give some players playing time that they've been denied.

It might stop the hemmorage of next year's signing class.

It might give some of the underling coaches a chance to shine.

It might flush Butch's version of coach speak down the toilet for good.

From a professional/legal standpoint, the administration will want to show they've evaluated Jones on his entire body of work--not on X.5 seasons.

From a players' point of view ... with half a season still to play, you send the message, "We've given up on the season."
That not only has a big impact on the team, it also affects recruiting.
I think mid-season firings are disrespectful to the players who've been recruited by a guy who is suddenly gone.

The more salient and productive question should be: Why wasn't he fired after last season?

With the early signing period the rules have changed but we don’t know how.

Logistically, it's a huge deal to fire a guy mid-season.
Unless he's done something immoral or illegal, there's little reason not to wait a month 'till the season ends.
That doesn't mean the PsTB can't (and aren't) reaching out to replacements.
Sit tight. Professionally, it makes sense not to be assholes about it.
Potential coaches will watch how UT handles it; the coaching fraternity is tight.

This is correct but with CBJ this year there's real mitigating circumstances: 1. we have a pile of early signees and many of them want to come to UT (they are not committed to Butch but to the university but they want to know who the coach is) 2. This team has gotten to the point that if nothing changes we won't make a bowl. It's quite possible we lose every game left. An interim may get us a win or two. 3. everyone with an eye on college football knows we've been more than patient with CBJ and also knows he needs to go.

How is firing a guy mid-season being unprofessional or an a-hole?

I disagree, Vols needs to be more patient with him. Rebuilding is not easy and takes some time. Hang in there and support him!

I think Butch is a really good coach, he's just a really shitty mason.

The real question is, could UT score a touchdown if Dr. Manhattan was their coach? Given his powers, I say it's possible. If he can destroy the world with a single thought, he can probably improve UT's offense to the point where they can pull off a TD.

I envision a video clip from the end of Ole Yeller where they’ve had the dog penned up for so many days waiting to see if he shows signs of rabies and it’s the last day only when the boy goes out to check on Ole Yeller, the dog is rabid and quite mad. I can see someone photoshopping Butch’s head on Ole Yeller and a big orange UT on his side. Saban’s head has been photoshopped onto the boy. He goes back inside and gets the rifle and tells his Ma, “I’ll do it! He’s my dog!”
And Saban puts Butch down.

^^ this is the internet post of a man who lives vicariously through the Alabama football team. The type of man who poisons trees when his team loses. Or shoots at his own son for the same reason. Or fricks his sister.

The thing that is enraging so many is that we have talent on this team. If you can't score a TD with one of the best RBs in the nation and WRs Marquez Callaway and Brandon Johnson on the team there's something very, very, wrong with the coaching.

It's not scheme. It's not talent. It's coaching all the way and this season couldn't make that fact any clearer.

Oh, absolutely. The knock on Butch has never been his recruiting. He's a good-to-great recruiter. But CFB, more than most sports, relies on great coaching. You can recruit a half-dozen four and five stars in CBB and just sit back and watch them destroy their opponents. You can't really do that in CFB. By developing a foundation of talent, Butch's main purpose might actually turn out to be the brick-by-brick thing. Just not in the way he intended.
