Because in basketball the stressful, zero sum part of the season is the NCAA Tournament and rarely are you competing against teams in your league.
However, it gets a lot less friendly once conference play starts.

You have a bazillion games a season, well not a bazillion, so one loss or win isn't a "Oh Sweet Jesus!" moment. Until, that is, you get to nut cutting time when teams are trying to make the Big Dance.

Bb, like baseball, has a lot more wiggle room. It will heat up between a few teams for the regular season conf champs, the SEC Tourney, and especially for embarrassing early season March Madness matches or NIT invites... or NIT success bragging.

Men’s basketball and baseball talk is usually pretty civil. There are more games so a loss usually isn’t as catastrophic as a loss in football, plus their aren’t as many fans as for football.
Now women’s basketball? it is usually all the fans of the 14 schools who don’t care about women’s basketball ruthlessly mocking the fans of the two schools that take it seriously. But I won’t name any names.
