I take that back. 7 of Pitt's 9 are retro active.

I'd be curious to see when they started claiming each, If it was relatively soon after whatever initial poll granted them the title or if they did it en masse well after the fact like we are doing here and Bama did in the 80's.

No one really made any of these up. For any team. They found a selector that was recognized by the NCAA and decided to claim it.

Now why Alabama claims 1941 instead of 1945 or 1966 is beyond me. 45 and 66 were perfect seasons. But yeah all kinds of teams do this. Yale and Princeton have a ton of them.

Exactly. We are not the first to decide at one point to start recognizing multiple titles we hadn't previously. There is precedent for what we have done (that doesn't mean it is right or wrong, but it is nothing new).

Question I asked as well.

1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004 are NOT recognized by the NCAA records book. All their selectors are in there.

Any random season before the AP has multiple champions. For instance 1925.

Alabama, Dartmouth and Michigan all claim it. The big difference was that Alabama went out to California and beat heavily favored Washington in the Rose Bowl, the only bowl game in the country. So, that gives it legitimacy in some people's eyes because they won the Roae Bowl. Same with 1930 and 1934.

I don't believe Michigan claims 1925. Dartmouth didn't allow teams to play in postseason games in any sport back then.

I agree, which makes any claims in those eras hold some validity. The main question I have for some are ones that the poll wasn't even around during that season. If the poll that is being used wasn't invented until years later, that at least throws some questions into that claim. Doesn't mean ultimately it isn't a valid claim, just more questionable if say all the polls that were actually in existence in a year vote one way and then a few that were created a few years after voted another way.

Still though, anything back then is highly subjective. If there is no set standard, which there isn't here, foolish to not go the route that benefits you the most.

No Michigan doesn't claim it but it what they call an unclaimed National Title.

As for bowl games...Neither did Army, Navy or Notre Dame post 1924. It was an extra game that some teams chose not to play. And when the AP was created they didn't count that against those teams or even count the results because it wasn't viewed as part of the season. That's why losing the bowl didn't hurt you.

We can talk about everyone claiming fake natties, but there is a difference between this and Bama having 14-15 while claiming 18. Auburn has 2 legit titles and is claiming 9. Some of these publications might as well be the school newspaper

I have developed a 100% accurate scientific poll that awards the team most deserving of the national championship every season. The formula is much too complex and long to post here. It would exceed the maximum number of characters allowed. And it is too complex for simpletons to understand anyway. But it is 100% accurate.

It is the Dalton International College Knowledge Rating System. Based on on the Dick Rating System, Alabama has 69 national championships. Auburn has 0.

It was a ploy by Freeze so that he could tell the team he brought championships that should have been theirs.

Overall though.... pretty dumb and sad by AU.

Yeah, I'm no Auburn fan, but this just wasn't a good move for the program. But, winning covers over a multitude of sins so if they go out this season and win 8+ games, I think it will be forgotten. But if they have another disappointing season, this will be even more embarrassing.

Auburn just needs to start winning; that cures everything.

I’ll give you 2004, easy. 1993 you were on punishment, that’s your own fault. Not giving it. 1983, Miami won it, you were a respectable 2nd.

1958 LSU , try again.

Who cares about anything pre WW2…….

There was talk of doing it after the 2013 MNC game but since we lost that talk died down. Then we changed AD’s, then we changed presidents then we changed AD’s again then we got an AD with a clue.
