It is because they are afraid of losing or looking bad. Arkansas could easily play ASU instead of any other Sunbelt opponent or Central Arkansas instead of another Southland team like Nichols.

You know it isn't that hard to see the Arky point of view on this... or, for that matter, the perfectly legitimate view of the other schools in this state.
We aren't the largest state in the US but you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a University here. The ADs at Arkansas made a decision a long time ago that as small as we are the state can't afford to have an in state rivalry.
Laugh it up and chuckle all you want but that is really what it comes down to. Now, that having been said, the state has grown quite a bit and our recruiting footprint isn't as shallow as it used to be. Should we play Arkansas State and other in state schools?
There is something to be said in favor of that. Why pay Nicholls State to come in and play us when we can play ASU or Central Arkansas? Partly its tradition and bad blood between the schools. Partly it is because the original argument still holds some truth to it. We aren't the largest state out there and splitting the fans into Arkansas vs Arkansas State would hurt recruiting for both schools.
For the record, yes, I think we should play Arkansas State in the second or third game every season. Keep the money in state and it ensures that we get a school that will take their best shot at us to tune us for the season. But there are some very good reasons to do that as well.

UAB can suck a fat one.
I wouldn't be opposed to playing Troy or South Alabama, though I don't really care about it either way.

Fair point you make (see Mississippi) but really, what are the chances that Arky State is going to morph into anything even remotely resembling a UA rival, no matter how much "help" it gets?
I think that ship sailed a long time ago.

So LSU fans bitch about us not playing a tough enough schedule, then start a thread about how we don't play UAB, Troy and South Alabama?

Why would they?
Nothing to gain and everything to lose. Ole Miss does play Memphis, which is essentially like playing an in state game.

Arkansas State won't play UCA anymore and the reason is obvious.
Funny how their terrible fans whine that we won't play them.

It's ironic that LSU resumed playing in the other state programs during Saban's tenure. It was Skip Bertman that set it all up when he took over as AD, but Saban was certainly on board with it. In all honesty, he probably didn't care either way then, and still doesn 't now. But it would be interesting to see if he could get the Bama athletic department to lighten up and schedule a game if really wanted it. If anyone could change their minds, it would be him.
Skip was really invested in building up the other programs in the state when he was coaching. I'm still a big fan of this, and am glad it has continued. Most of the typical cupcakes that we bring into Tiger Stadium bring hardly any fans with them, where the smaller schools in LA usually sell out their allotment. Also, LSU pays less of a guarantee than they have to for out-of-state programs and the money stays in the state.

The main reason Arkansas doesn't play in-state schools is not splitting fans into deciding where to donate their money, not recruiting.

Also Auburn owned that Crimson arse when the series first started. Tide needed a 40 year break in the action to regroup.

There IS no valid reason for the Hogs not to play Arkansas State. And there are several valid reasons why they should.
But they are not going to do it.

Lol last year's 3-9 team beat their conference champ by 3 scores.

They are playing in 2016 I believe. They regularly play in baseball and basketball too. I'm no A State fan but I wouldn't say they puss out.

Sign me up for wanting to play Troy, UAB or USA. ....shoot ....why not ASU also .... Id rather play them than the Chattanooga's and FAU's of the college football world.
